Starting problems - immobiliser???

  Renault Clio 197 ('08)
Hey all,
Wodering if anyone can help me here! I have a 51 plate 1.2 clio dynamique and it appears to have developed a fault. It doesn't seem to want to start sometime but it's very intermitant!!!
Ok so here's what happens - put the key in and turn it and the immobiliser light flashes rapdily. Turn the key back and sometime it'll do it again, sometimes it will start and sometimes it will turn over but after a few seconds stop turning over and not start. So I thought this must be an immobiliser fault somewhere? Tried my spare key and that made no difference so it's been into Renault, very reluctantly. They've quoted me today 270 notes to replace the ring receiver around the ignition and supply two new key fobs. Another two of my friends have had this problem and one has had it repaired on warrenty by renault and they just replaced the reciever ring and that solved it. Am I being ripped off saying I need new fobs? I personally think I am! Also does the battery in the fobs affect the immobiliser? I was thinking of getting a reciever and fitting it myself since the part is supposed to be relatively cheap!
Another thing I was wondering is does the clio have fuel cut off switch somewhere that I can check? If so where is it and how's best to check it out??? Thanks for reading!!!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Dan.

From your description of the problem its probaly just the transponder ring (a common failing).
You shouldn't need two new keys just a new transponder ring which isn't that much (£30 I think or so) and you can replace it yourself.
Its unusal to want to try and replace the keys maybe a recode yes but that only a few minutes work nothing like a total bill of £270.

Well it seems pretty clear my Renault garage are really trying to rip me off!! I put in a search on parts gateway and I got two parts coming up - an immobiliser receiver from Just Renaults - about £24 incl. p&p and Renault Spcialists say they have one for £41 incl. p&p. Is "Transponder Ring" the correct name for the part? Any other ideas where to get prices from?? Cheers.
Dan.
