Rip it out. Is only there to stop the rattling. Mine hasn't got any

I'd say it's knee/thigh protection from the metal round the column in the event of an accident, mine's gone too

I thought it was some kind of theft protection to help stop or make it harder to force a screw driver into it.
I may rip mine out if others have, it does weigh quite a bit!
