Steering Grind/Creak Noise

Just wondering whether someone could possibly shed a little bit of light on the following:

At low speeds (Hell even when stationary), there's a super annoying grinding/creaking noise coming from the steering; it doesn't seem to matter whether it's on full lock or just a gentle nudge.

Not the most helpful description I know, but it literally sounds (occasionally even feels) as though it's coming from the steering wheel/column. Does the steering feel any heavier? Well no not really; although the steering does feel slightly vague on initial turn in.

Just to clarify: it grinds/creaks when the engine is off, as well as on.
