Steering Play...

Hi all,

Time for mot again and Ive noticed I have excessive play in my steering. After reading through previous posts on here, I think its down the steering column and uj...?

As a temp solution, Ive decided to have it welded by my mate. Question is, how easy is it do?? It looks fairly straight forward, but I just want to know if there is anything I need to look out for or do while the column is out?

Also to get the column out, what do I need to remove? Pedals? Parts of Dash?

hello mate, why not get a second hand one there only about £40 from infinicar. but beware u run a risk of it not fitting as the 1 i got didnt fit, think it was from an r19 16v, but im gettin my money back so not to worried , i ended up paying £282 for a brand new column supplied and fitted

thing is m8 i WOULDNT f**kabout welding the column as its got a pretty imporant job to do, as i said above give infinicar a bell and ask them to make sure the column is for a mk1 clio 16v. u wont regret spending a bit of money on it as it will fill loads safer after.

I wouldnt get a second hand one.. pointless, its probably in the same state as most!

Get a new one!

My mot is due next week, so time is against me. As a temp solution I would like to get it welded and then next week (Ive got the week off) fit a new one from Renault.

Is steering play definetly a mot failure?

Stearing play is defo a failure.

Getting the copumn out is a pain in the nads, can be welded in the car if you pull tge carpet and foam away, will ahve a much better feel of the road wiht it welded too

Cheers Lunner.

So it can be welded in the car? Would it be best to remove the pedals as well to do this?

Looking at the previous pics of welds, it looks like it needs welded down the left and right hand side (looking at the column from the front seat). Would this sound right?
