steering wheel problem

Ive got an odd problem with the steeringwheel on a 2002 Clio172. The rubber thumb-grips have melted in the current heatwave, and started to peel and tear (anyone else had this happen?). Renault say that the trim is only warrantied for one year, so Id have to buy a new wheel (mega-bucks). I tried gluing the rubber bits back on, but it now looks and feels totally crap! My options are: 1) new or 2nd hand wheel. 2) replacement with aftermarket non-airbag wheel (causes problems with warning light, fitting, insurance, warranty, etc). 3) get new rubber insets from somewhere? Any good advice would be apreciated. You can e-mail me direct. Cheers Mark

 think i need those sun glasses! red text! ahhhh :)

Anyways, first thing id do would be to check with Renault to find out if putting on a different steering wheel would invalidate your warranty for the rest of the car?

To be honest though, for safety reasons alone, its probably worth getting Renault to replace the wheel. Not many garages deal with airbags as they have to hold a firearms license to do so.

Final option would be to have another go at Renault, say that although it may be out of warranty youd expect more from them, keep going on and on at them, eventually u may get somewhere, even if it its only a slight discount - gotta be worth a try?

I would try and get the work of Renault Im sure they should pay for it, it only seeems fair. If not get then to agree to fit it, and get a 172s stearing wheel and reuse the airbag of your own wheel. Im sure a few people on the forum have had the wheel taken of. You need Renault to lock the airbag module to stop it going of whilst your working on it then remove the wheel and but the new Clios wheel on it and replace the airbag with the one your Clio has at the moment. The center of the wheel houses the airbag module and this can just be taken of seperate to the wheel.

As said above, id try renault again but i think youd be doing very well if they change it for free - best case youre gonna have to pay for it m8. As for the aftermarket wheel, if you get the correct hub (£50), youll get a wiring kit to stop your airbag light coming on. Theyre simple enough to fit and you wont need to go near renault. I did my megane - 2 hours tops! If u wanna know how to do it PM me.

P.S Ive got a MOMO jet steering wheel for sale if you want - silver/grey trim, v.nice - ill get you a pic if youre interested....

Ive had exactly the same problem. My steering wheel was replaced for a brand new one about two weeks ago by Renault Leicester under warranty. Its a design fault so get them to replace it under warranty!
