Renault's Response: Offered 50% of repair (in conjunction with customer service centre). Declined and cancelled order for 197 due to poor in-warranty service. Dealer offered 100% repair. Declined again.

Told dealer that Renault Customer service abysmal compared to last two cars (Skoda and Subaru). Have now placed order for Octavia. Will keep 182 but dealer stunned when I walked from service centre to Sales and cancelled a 15 grand order. You have never seen Customer service get better faster in your life. V funny!!

With regards to the "Melting" problem, I believe this to be either oil or solvent based interaction with the plastic. Wife uses a lot of hand cream (most contain petrolatum). When hands sweat moisturiser or perfumes / aftershaves react with the plastic. Just a theory but I do work in R+D in Skin care.

Oddly enough I was going to make a sarcastic remark about too much old spice, lol. I'm on my second RS clio now and never had any issues with either of the steering wheels. Maybe people should wash and rinse their hands more thoroughly before leaving the house. That said it's poor showing that a residue of beauty products is enough to do the damage some peoples wheels have suffered.
