Steering Whine

On a morning when my car is really cold (Frosty / Snowy) I get a whine when I turn the wheel left or right but only for about the first 30 seconds of driving.

I don't know if the power steering fluid is low or what would cause this noise?

How do I check power steering fluid level? Can I just buy some from Halfords or something? Does the car require certain fluid?

Could it be anything else?

All help appreciated.

Sam.

Power steering pump whine, quite alot of them seem to do it.

ATF is power steering fluid, and should do, just check the level in the filler bottle and check pipes and connections for leaks

Cheers Korky. Ill have a look.

Where is the filler bottle in the clio engine bay ?

Near the coolant bottle mate, mine does this but i think mines the pump that knackered!

Mine is deffo the pump.. I just need to change it when i get time..

I had the whine from cold which I suspected was the pump. As the belt was due I got the pump done aswell. It still whines!!!

My 182 steering pump has whined for the first 30 seconds after cold start up ever since I got the car nearly 2 years ago.

In that time I've had a full set of new belts by Renault, it still whines and Renault never found anything wrong.

As mentioned above above mate, the filler bottle is next to the coolant one.

Mine whines ever since I put the cup alternator setup on but I've checked everything and it seems to be ok

Mine does it all the time... Cheap supercharger mod yo!

Lol.

I guess its nothing to be worrying about then?

It didn't do it this morning, only seems to do it when its like minus weather outside.

Obviously it needs attention but I think you'll be okay for a while. Mine needs a new pump and whines for a few minutes and then goes quiet until you push the steering hard again... It's on the Christmas shutdown "To Do" list for me though.

Mine will only do it when the car is freezing, below 0. Literally after 15 seconds it won't whine again no matter how hard I push the steering.

Mine does it all the time.. I just treat it as a supercharger for now :o
