Stopping under seat sub vibrating

Blaupunkt_BlueMagic_XLf200A_active_subwoofer.jpg

My sub is shaped like the above. It sits in the passenger footwell. When I had it fitted in my Panda, it was fine because it was sitting on the floor on some carpet.

In the Clio however, it sits in a 'well' kind of thing that is only lightly carpeted. Hence, when the bass is turned up, it vibrates in the well making a horrible vibration noise.

I'm wondering what I can do to stop this. All I can think of at the moment is perhaps covering the sub in carpet... has anyone got any other ideas? Perhaps some sort of padding to go around it?

Without sounding like trolling, but isn't vibrating EXACTLY what you want it to do?

It's hardly going to be filling the cabin with actual bass frequency noise, so it's more a seat-vibrator than a sub.

But, anyway, your choice. Provided there's no heat-sinks to get covered over I cant see any problem with just putting a couple of layers of foam/carpet under the sub itself. But covering the whole thing isn't the best move I'd imagine

Easy dude, get some sound deadening foam from any car audio dealer ( decent one ) and cut it and place underneath it'll stop it right away it's magic stuff, all my speakers and fittings are padded out with the stuff and I now have pure harmony with the stereo at any volume, time consuming but really worth it.

You don't understand... the sub itself is just as decent as a 'proper' sub. It's turned right down at the moment, if I turn the bass up it sounds very good... but the actual whole sub unit shakes making a vibrating/rattling noise which is unbearable. As said in my Panda I didn't have the 'well', just a flat floor so it was fine.

Foam? It's quite a tight fit in there. Cheers for the post, I will search for some now!

I do understand, you've got a weenie sub that's rattling the paper-thin metal beneath the thin carpet.

As the man says tho, get some foam underneath and you'll be reet.

(In fairness, better an underwear sub than some of the monstrosities you see in the boot of cars!)

its only about 5mm thick but proper dense stuff and it moulds as well so no gaps and doesn't stretch or pinch, it's epic stuff.

Not sure whereabouts you are, SCR used to sell the stuff.

It's the bits of metal that stick up _|¯|_sub here_|¯|_ like that under the seat that it's rattling on! I need padding on the sides and also the underneath. It was fine in my other car that didn't have those bits

How much should I be looking at paying? There's some on eBay but it's £20 for 2x 25cm :dapprove:

I paid SCR £50 a roll, but went quite quite far tbh, at a guess was probably around 30 x 80CM and around 5MM thick.

Will the thickness decrease when the sub is sat on it? It's not overly heavy. Or is it strong stuff? I don't want the sub 'floating'!

it will mould to the contours over time, is the sub secured down at all? like place a bit of MDF under the Carpet and screwed down? i'd put that under it and will pad it out nicely. would stop it banging about over bumps too. Expanding foam might work too.

No it's just sat on the floor at the moment. It's quite heavy but can't imagine it packing the foam down completely.

Ah thats the reason, what's likely to be causing it is resonance from not being secured, major ball ache but what I would do and done in the past is take the carpet up and put a piece of MDF where you want the sub to go ( sickaflex the mdf down ), carpet back on and screw it into the board with the foam layer under the sub will keep it nice and steady and in place.

Ball ache but will be much better, might save the device too in case you hit something big, pot hole, bump and send it into the seat frame above, the cone is exposed to so likely to happen.

Other than the vibrating, are you happy with the new sub Jesus? Beat your old one? Might be picking one up soon and would be good to hear a review!

Yep! It provides sufficient bass even on setting '3'. It goes up to 10 I think! Can be really loud if you want it to be. The old one was decent enough.

Take the seat out, and fix it down properly dude. Bit of foam underneath and maybe if there's nothing there a couple of small bolts through the floor pan.

Are you sure it's not rattling on the seat itself? Check under there first for anything that could be doing it, I.e the springs underneath the seat?

I still don't think that is required though. It's vibrating on the raised bits underneath the seats - the sides of the sub touch them when it's sat in place. A very snug fit.

As said it was fine in my other car which didn't have these - it didn't need securing down in the Fiat.

Ah so putting mdf or something down would make it closer, tricky. Hows thick is the total unit? I'll have a look under my seats later on and try and figure something out, you have treadlines I take it? Trophy?

Yep Trophy Recaros. If you look under the passenger seat you will see the bits I mean. Under the Panda's seats was a flat surface. This one has two raised 'beams' which the sub sits inside, but very snuggly.

Velcro doesn't work - it's vibrating on the sides not the underneath.

Don't know if this will help mate (or if the link will work) but this could be an answer. Similar to dynamat but cheaper! Might be a bit of aggro to line the floor or stick it where you need it but it will absorb & stop all rattles & vibrations. HTH
Chris.

Wow yeah its tiny under there. How about double sided tape all round but leave the film on the exposed side. Should suffice.
