Straight through on standard backbox?

  ?
My standard centre section has loose rattly baffles. Buying an aftermarket system is currently not an option.. so whilst im saving up/decided what to do... :

Thinking of just taking it to the local exhaust place and getting a straight-through pipe fitted with no silencer, instead of a new center section.

What are the implications of this? Will it sound different? Will it pass m.o.t / emissions etc?

its the cat that sorts the emissions

it will fail on emissions if you remove the cat, it's illegal without a silencer IIRC. you will here you car from about 10 miles away as well.

A silencer dosent mean your restricting the exhaust in anyway you know. Only the cat does that.

Take the cat away for example and all exhausts are ''straight through'' as in you put a golf ball at one end, it will roll out the other.

Removing silencers just means you make noise. No performance gains or loss

Not sure about noise limits at MOT time. I know on a track theres restrictions

There's some misinformed people in this thread.

Adding to the reply I've just sent you, shouldn't be a problem just finding somewhere to cut out the broken scilencer and replace with a straight through pipe.

Will be slightly louder, as you're removing a scilencer, however the standard back box should do a pretty good job of keeping the noise levels down.

Not a problem with emissions as the cat will still be in place.

not all standard silencers are "straight through"

or at least the standard renault ones i have seen.

centre section on a megane 1.6 for example similar design exhaust so just guessing

(your golf ball would get stuck :rasp:)

Thanks dave, btw in reply to your pm took it to an exhaust center who did say it was the center section, think i already checked heatshield etc. IF not, im sure they did but i will double check it before getting any work done :)
