strange brake wear

  172 cup
The story i was given by the guy i bought my car off, was that it was on its original tyres, having done only 17000 miles and from the wear patern i belived him

it is now on 26000 and i have just checked the wear on the discs
the fronts are only 25% worn, with a worn pad on one side and a fair bit of life in the other side

the rear discs are 70% worn with not much life in the pads

so either the front discs were replaced before i bought it which sounds like heavy wear to me. Or the fronts and backs have worn at the same rate.

what have other people found? and are the rear discs really £165

cheers

No read disks are cheap its the fact they have pushed in bearing in them which up the price and you won't want to resue old ones as there not that good anyway.

Sounds like your sliders on the caliepers need lubriacating up to even out the wear which is a common problem.

take the 2 bolts out on the caliper (well you can just take one out and loosen the other) and clean and lubricate the sliders, you might also have a sticking piston, work the piston right out and back in a couple of times

What are you using to say how worn the disk are?[/quote]

vernier to measure wearing part of disc
specs for thickness are the ones you sent me in the renault manuals, thanks again for them

i need to change the brake fluid so im going to put braided hoses on and new pads on the front, ill see if anything is sticking then

Arr right so long as your not working off what others have said or made up.

Sounds like the disks and pads might have been changed before the rear pads are only tiny new though.

Getting to 17k with stock stuff isn't bad depends how the person drive might have been a second driver using it harder and changed them without the owner knowing how hard theyre driving it.

To put in prespective loads of owners have had to change the stuff at the the first service so it woulnd't owrry me. Put another way I've worn the stock stuff out in 5k (abeitly on a none RS but still the ideas much the same)
