Strange noise... help needed!!!

Car  Cup 172
My Cup has developed a knocking/banging from the back of the car. I thought it was the exhaust at first, but have had this checked out and nothing is wrong with it...

Its the same kind of noise you would expect from an exhaust banging on the underside of the car, coming from the nearside corner...

Any ideas?

Changed the rear discs and pads at the weekend, could it be anything to do with that???

Ta,

Phil.

have you checked the rubber mouting... often at a glane the exhaust seems ok, but the rubber 'X' in the mount has collapsed.

Could be the rubber mount as mentioned but if you've had it checked at a garage I think they'd of noticed that. Have you checked the suspension? We just had a similar problem on my dads BM and we spent ages checking the exhaust but it was fine. So resorted to checking bearings and anti roll bar bushes but once the wheel was off it was clear the spring was fooked.

Its at reno on monday, but usually when it comes to fault finding they are hopeless...

Ive looked and the X thing (think you mean the one holding the backbox in place) is fine.... Ill have another look tonight... Praying its nowt expensive...

Rear Shocks is my guess. Look on the shock to see if they are wet or damp.

A leaking rear shock would cause banging

I had a burst shock about 6 months after I bought my 172... they replaced it under warranty... It made a similar noise, thought it was the exhaust but as soon as it was on the ramp you could tell...

TP, look up and down the shock absorber, its not going to be gushing fluid like a tap, they might appear damp, or if they are a bit dirty the dirt will look darker (damp) in places.

Kewl mate. Its really dangerous so very important. If they do go, they go big time.

Last nigth I had a good look round under teh car... shockers looked okay, so I was just about to put car back in the garage when I noticed something that didnt look right... The bolts holding the calliper to the carrier were only finger tight! Tightened them up and the problem is solved... Looks like between us me and my mate overlooked tightening them... Fools.
