Strange rumbling at 2.5K Revs when cold

Has anyone else experienced this? When the car (182) is started up for the first time in a day, when I accelearte in 1st or 2nd gear at about 2.5K - 3.5K revs there is a strange rumbling noise coming from the engine, it doesnt sound too healthy, it is quite hard to describe the noise but that is the best I can do. Once the car is warmed up the noise does not appear to be there.

If anyone can explain what this could be it would be appreciated?

Thanks

How long does the noise last if you hold at those revs?

Why do you think it is the engine rather than the transmission?

It could be anything, I am not mechanically minded, it lasts for as long as you hold it, change gear it stops but will then start once you get to 2.5K revs. All I know is it comes from the front of the car.

During the cold start program the engine is very restrictive so that it passess euro emmision tests. At about 2.5krpm my engine can stutter a bit when completly cold, take it slightly above or slightly below and its fine.

Soon as its out of cold mode its also fine. Its not really noticable unless you hold exactly that rpm.
