from memory its something like bacteria that comes from the air con unit settling down in the vents when it has been turned off, then after a while it goes off & starts smellng like smelly socks until you blast them out again,,,you can get a spray that cleans your vents apparently, .....mines does it sometimes as well...

It seems to be affecting everyone who rarely uses aircon.

You can buy the expensive renault refresher stuff but be careful inserting the foam into the vents, im on my second HU!!

You should ideally run your aircon for 30 minutes once a month to clear the bacteria out and to ensure the aircon works efficiently. You should also try to run it on the hottest setting with the aircon on.

I do that regularily and have never had a strange smell.

thats exactly what it smells like sweaty socks ....... cheers lads will nuke the bacteria on the way home from work ....

  don't

prob best to give it a good 10 mins on hottest setting, and 10 mins on coldest, so obviously u dont want to be in it on hottest really

if that doesnt work u can get some aircon cleaner stuff from halfords for £10, u leave it spraying everywhere while the aircon is on circulate

Yup is just bacteria in moisture in the heater box. You should run the A/C all year round at least once a week not just for the reason of keeping the A/C unit smells away but to keep theA/C effective.

The refridgerant lines that carry the gas round the system also have oil in it to lubricate the seals etc. If this doesnt get circulated then they can dry up perish or shrink back and the gas leaks out of the system.

You can get antibac A/C sprays that come with really long straw/pipes connected to them, you feed these right into the vents and spray, getting it all into the heaterbox, this will sort it.
