Stupid sat nav question

  RIP Dan
I want a sat nav for the motor...Tom Tom seem to be the best.

Me and the Mrs are into walking and are going away more and more....can these things be taken out of the car and with us walking? Will it go down to that kind of level? It would be for safety too, in case we get lost on the paths etc.

Or is there something else out there?

Sorry for the dumb question, it would be nice if the Tom Tom does both.

Yes a tomtom can be taken with you, it is portable, i also think a lot of the other models are also, however, they are driving aids and will give you all street names etc, dont be surprised if you are up a hill walking and all you see is a big picture of green with the hills name.

Walking... Only option is a device made for walking, or a PDA.

PDA is quite versatile, if it's just for GPS, make sure buy one with a built in GPS receiver, such a relief after having one that's not.

If it's just for the car, get a Garmin or Navman, not Tomtom.

PS Software wise for a PDA, CoPilot gets the win from me hands down.

Hi, i've got the Road Angel Adventuer 7000, bloody great unit. It's sat nav for your car, Camera detector and also includes OS mapping for walking and rambling.

You can get satnav for phones.

I have tomtom on my Nokia N80. It was great when walking around Paris and Rome.

Just pop the gps in your bag and keep your phone handy as you would do anyway.

I have tried a few. Dad has a TomTom 910 which is the top one you can get. I have a navman F20. I have tried other people to.

The 910 is by far the best Sat Nav i have ever used but only really necessary if you go abroad but the lowest version will still work the same but just have UK maps on. It tells you the speed limit of speed cameras and fits all the details like mph, toa etc all on the screen.

The F20 is much smaller and flatter. I prefer it when walking around but it is poor on the road, it doesn't fit all the details on at once you have to chose 1/6 to have shown on the screen, also does not say the speed of speed cameras which i find a useful tool in some places where its not clear.

Thanks Menzo. I will look at the 910. My mate has a Navman, we were over in the UK last week and used it......i found it wasnt that good.
