Subs and Ohms Trouble...

  Mondeo STTDCI

The Current (To Be Setup...)

Components in the Front and a single 12" in the rear running off a 4 way amp.

The Future Set up...

Components in Front AND back running off one four way amp..and 2 subs running off another 4way amp.

THE PROBLEM....

WHAT OHM SUB DO I BUY THAT CAN BE USED IN BOTH SYSTEM SETUPS DESCRIBED ABOVE - 2ohm or 4ohm??? And a basic explanantion of why.

Thanks

For most 4 channel amps that are used to run a sub you will need to go for a single coild sub at 4ohms. That configuration will enable you to bridge 2 of the channels to give 4ohms mono without any problems.

If you went for a dual 4ohm coil sub then you would be running the amp at 2ohms mono. Nearly all 4 channel amps will run 2ohm Stereo but not mono...Rockford and a few others are an exception to that rule.

It depends which amp you are thinking of getting though really.

Hope that helps

The amp I have to start is a Rockford 501x.

THis will initially power the fronts and the first sub. Later I will add another sub and another 4 way amp and improved rears.

One amp will power the two subs on the sub-out on my head unit. THe other will power the fronts and new rears.

Your in luck then. The 501x will handle 2ohm mono per side (even though a power figure isnt listed in the manual). Running the amp like that will get you more power than the standard quoted figures. You will need a decent power cable going to it though.

If you get a couple of dual 4ohm subs and try it out on the amp then you will know if you will get away with it or not. However if you can get the sub you want in a single 4 ohm version then you could go for that if you didnt want to risk it.

We have sold at least 10 systems with the old 500x having a couple of dual 4ohm subs running off it...no problems reported yet.
