subs on shelf

dont

just take my word for it

but if you must a "free air" sub is best

bppyaka! might get a quad 12" bandpasss sh*tter from macro. promises of 4000w, with some nice paper cones, kinda like the ones u eat chips out of

how about the genesis 6*9 subs (no they are not normal 6*9s!!) they work well in the parcel shelf in infinate baffle so ive heard, im buying some as i cant afford the boot space for a normal sub. Just a thought

When putting 6*9s in the shelf (which I myself is against) is there anything you can do to not bugger up the soundstage & not blow the cones after a long period of time being above 2 subs in the boot? Could I put them in enclosures? i.e. build boxes into the home made MDF shelf under the speakers so they never conflict with the air space of a sub?
Would this be a good idea?

yer aas long as they do not share the same air space as the subs they will be fine, so an enclosure will be fine. To not pull the sound stage back you could put an inline high frequency filter on each of them, so they only play mid bass, but if you have subs why would you want/need 6*9s??? it doesnt work in the way that the more cone area the louder, spend the money elsewere, eg better fronts, more powerfull amp ect...

lol, Its not like I dont have good fronts & quality yet powerful amps mate, Ive got myself a set of 3 way polykelvar componants by focal for the front, but Ive always liked to have rear fill, & i guess im just very generous to passengers & like to have the whole car filled with sound! :)
But I had 6*9s in the rear door panels in my last motor but im about to get my next motor which I dont wanna be cutting into the rear panels to put them & they arnt bassy 6*9s, they are really high quality & are only mid & vocals so would like to keep them & Im only gonna put them in the shelf If they have their own enclosures. But wanna know what I have to do to not let them conflict with my subwoofers.

I aint worrying about pulling the sound back as such, coz I will set most of the sound to come out the front, just enough thru the 6*9s so it has that surround sound effect so music is coming from all around. Which is what ive got set out in my room.

P.S What are these inline frequencie filter thingsy?? & where sells them? cheers

they are little gadjets that filter out specific frequencies (SP), so you can filter out treble, or bass, if the treble is filtered out sound stage wont be as affected, but not so sure if it will be that great if your not too sorried about sound satge, dont know a huge amount about them sorry.

Suppose you could fade the sound slightly forward to help if staging does bugger up more than you would accpet. Can you not get an adaptor for them to go into the rear pannels? i undersatand about not wanting to cut them, feel the same way about my car. You could sell them and use the more for some 5.25 coxails/comps for the back i suppose, but 6*9s will be fine in an enlosure, as the only problem is that the air moving in the boot is also moving arounf the underside of the 6*9 and some bass cancelation will occur if 6*9s dont have an enclosure, as well as damaging them.

Sorry about all the waffle, hope it helps

Rorrie

Nah mate, that all cool! I understand all that, & Ive also got a set of componants for the rear & a set of small 10cm coaxial mids for wherever there is a space if need be!

I just really like this 6*9s and ive been nothing but impressed with them (even tho I used to hate them too!!) But I dont want them messing with the air space of the subwoofers. So I reckon I will go for the enclosure idea & if I can, I might stick the comps in the rear too in the foot wells & put the tweeter somewhere where its facing at the rear passengers ears to get optimum sound quality.
Im sure Ill figure it all out when I get my valver soon... Although im gonna have big problems fitting the 3 ways in!! gonna have to build a couple of door pods lol, oh well, summers here! free time ahoy!!
