Sudden misfire!

My 172 Cup has been running as nature intended recently. This morning I made the 1km drive to my foot doctor as I didn't know if I'd make the walk back (I'm fine). I just driven back and the car feels like it's got a misfire. Wait! What? Why? No lights on the dash came on and it has done a few short runs from cold over the past few weeks without issue. I'm hoping it'll drive fine in an hour but what could cause this? It's fully serviced etc etc dosh etc so unless something has gone pop or come loose I'm stumped. Again!

(Disclaimer: I still love my Cup)

I’ve had to abandon it at home and take an Uber. I just joined the RAC a few weeks back so should I have them have a look in the morning?

On the subject of code readers what’s the best to get?. I read that a Renault Clip is the daddy but it’s expensive.

Sure i've still got an iCarsoft i907 code reader somewhere.

You can have it if you want, if i can find it.
That could be a life saver in the future… if not a pound saver! I’m slowly renewing bits in this car to make it totally reliable, for a Clio, and avoid issues like these. I have fuel pump, coil packs and leads in the next batch of items to do.

I’ll send a pm with my address. Thanks.

My mate has this. Will it be compatible and if so where does it plug in?

My mate has a Memo Scanner he has lent to me so I did a scan with just the ignition on and it showed no codes. I started the engine and again no codes came up. I removed all the relays in the engine fuse box, cleaned the contacts and refitted them. The last time I did this whilst repairing the fuse box and putting some dielectric grease on the white plug the engine ran rough. I had to push all the relays back in and it cured the problem (hmmm, a relay issue?) Today, however, it has not cured the problem. I checked that the plug to the coil pack was fitted correctly and also the plug leads. I did another scan (no codes showed) and ran the engine. I could tell immediately that there was no difference and again no codes came up.

Nothing else looks amiss so I'm thinking that something has just gone pop. I've ordered new leads and coil pack since everything else is recent (full service, plugs, belts etc done 10 months back). Lambda could be an issue so if the leads and coil pack don't solve it what do I need for those exhaust sensors?

(parts cannon now on active duty!)

Success! I am reborn, as is the car.

I fitted the new coil pack and instantly the car sounded and felt right. I’ve been for a very short test drive, only about 10 minutes, and let the engine warm up. The car feels fine now. In fact, it feels a little smoother than before, but maybe that is just me feeling so damn happy that another issue has been resolved.

Even though the old part was a genuine Renault item it has been off at some time as the two bolts at the back are missing. I will try to get told of these as I want to get everything present and correct on the car. I have a new set of NGK spark plugs that I will fit next week. The leads currently on the car are marked as Renault, but if you look closely at the male connectors on the coil pack, you will see some black marks. I am wondering if there was some kind of connection issue that has caused this burnt look. I can’t smell anything except WD-40, but I think it’s wise for me to fit the new leads next week.

Might check mine again. It randomly behaved weird at a set of lights a few weeks back - almost like an injector failed, but had no warning lights on the dash.

Never came back afterwards - but you've got me thinking to check the coil pack - especially as it's so easy to get to.

If it's the original one, you may as well change it anyway.

I could have saved a bit of money with that link. I ordered at about 1am on Thursday from Kam Racing whilst going home in an Uber....I just had to get the part quickly and I was completely shagged.

You live and learn.

Need to add nearly £10 for delivery on that Autodoc price, but still just about comes in cheaper than UK suppliers.

Upto a week delivery time though.
