Supercharged 172

not that ive heard, maybe aborad, a few poeple are playing with turbos

if you want big power for your car, drop a new megane 2.0 Turbo 255 engine in!

Dropping a new engine may be cheaper as if you get one from a crashed car your talking about £1k max then another £1k to drop it into the car. Chip it for £500 and you must be talking close the 260hp for £2.5k plus you can sell the 172 engine on if you want.

Depend how much power you want for £2k you can get a 172 to 200hp (and no not by going to LAD)

Its about £6k for a totally fitted 250hp 172 engine at a guess. The kits alone is £3k and then work on top is about another 3k so dropping a new engine is probably cheaper.

Never heard of a supercharger 172 if you want no lag why not tune a 172 engine to that sort of level BenR is the person to talk to but says 320hp is possible without forced induction and would be cheaper than a 6k turbo I think.

Had a day dream today at work about dropping a Megane turbo engine in the 172.........tune it up to 300bhp.....now thats more like it. 200 bhps for wimps ! ;)

<RANT> Why didnt Renault just whack the 225 engine in a clio, rather than tease another 10bhp from the engine? If it was a Clio 225, then I might want to buy one, where as now it is just a 182 so I dont.... </RANT>

Ditto, if it had been a 2.0 turbo I would have bought one.

Beleive so. But then it is as ugly as a Micra.

Is there room for an aftermarket Supercharger in the engine bay of a 172?

a 225 would be too much competition for the v6 infact it wold plaster the v6 so they wont do it
but arent they discontinuing the V6 in 2005? i think i must have got my wires crossed?im sure i heard that

Should be....... if they can stick one in the new Mini a Clio shouldnt to much of a prob.....turboing would be more cost effective though.

supercharger on 172 isnt a brillient idea as it runs out of puff at high revs so turbo works better providing its small enough to not give too much lag

so id prob be better going for k-tecs turbo when its avalable ?

supercharger is supost to give 80% increase in power with an intercooler

Best to go turbo.

The megane engine may fit but the gearbox wont. so youd have to use the 172 box.

k-tec one should be worth the wait

Super chargers only run about 7-9 psi of boost, they spin up instantly from the belt but then only spin as fast as they are driven.

Turbos however spin up later but boost isnt an issue - you got a good enough turbo and you can run boost as high as you can get it. Seen RS tuross running 30+ psi. More boost = more power!

Turbo also sound sweet cause you get to put dump valves on!

u can as long as the internals take it supercharge anythin to any power over 100% power increase. and they dont really run out of puff like people say

there is a girl who comes into our shop occasionally (Motor World) and she claims she intends on having her 172 supercharged.........and that a garage has already checked it all for fitment....

It will fit if youve got the cash......looked threw a old copy of Revs and theres a lad whod dropped a cossie engine into a mk2 Golf GTI...thats certainly not meant to fit also seen a few valvers, RSTs , 205 GTIs and even a little Fiat with the cossie lump shoved in !!.....so anytings possible

The company who sell Saxo superchargers claim on there website (or they used to) that any car can be supercharged. But space is the problem the piping is easier than a turbo isnt it take the power of fromn the aircon belt (or disconnect the aircon and use that mounting point). Then if ita low pressure kit you shouldnt need an intercoller but if so run it though a intercooler and to the throttle body all you need then are bigger injectors and a remap.

Sounds simple but it wont be.

Running 1/2 bar (7 psi) should get about 210hp with an intercooler and 1 bar pressure 260hp you need head work though to take advantage of the extra pressure.

Seen a valver with 350bhp Escort Cossie lump and converted to 4wd (in a mag any way)

The bloke was selling it for about £10-£11k, it even had a full dimma kit as well.

He reckons it cost £36k+ to build though. Bet its a beast of a car though.

Come on the lotto........
