Superchip

  Clio 197 cup
Hi all! getting a superchip for my 197 cup on thursday, cant wait will boost the bhp to 218, and torque to 205!! will let you guys know what a difference its makes!

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Bit optimistic in reality tbh.

The car will be around 190bhp so a remap will be lucky to bring it to an actual 197 let alone 210+ if mk3s are anything like mk2s.

190bhp is a bloody good standard one, mid 180's is much more common. We only manage 225bhp from the X85's with completely different cam profiles, port throttles and a very aggresive calibration.... maybe we should just stick "superchipped" stock engines into the race cars instead :rasp:

You should put a whole bag of superchips in your engine. 400bhp+.

You're going to get torn to pieces when people notice this thread I'm afraid mate.

- 197's are not 197ps. None of the Renault engines actually make the quoted figures.
- a 'superchip' will not give you 218hp or 205ft/lb of torque.
- finally, it's probably best you don't disagree with people who have a massive amount of experience with Renault engines (Icarus)

Sorry mate, I appreciate that you're excited about it and what not, but cars on throttle bodies and cams don't produce that sort of power. You have no hope.

why whenever you look these figures up this is what they state? its a whole lot of balls really!! cheers for the replies! still should make a difference!

RS engines never make quoted power. And 197 refers to PS not bhp. And them quoting 21bhp increase from a remap on an NA 2.0 is ridiculous in itself.

Meant to at say at best!

It's not your fault mate, plenty of people get sucked in by bulls**t advertising. Unless you know the Clio engines, you'd have no reason to doubt them.
Remaps on these tend to maker more of a difference to the drivability of the car, better throttle response, smoother torque curve.
You'll notice a difference, just don't expect miracles.

thanks for the comments vish, im new to clios so still learning! think maybe should have stuck with the civic type R!

I would strongly advise you consider who you let lose on the car with regards ECU calibration work. Most tuner market companies/groups who target a wide range of cars do not have great experience with specific marques such as Renault Sport and as such will generally not be capable of producing a calibration to the standard of that which the more specialist companies who deal with these cars day in, day out can.

The 197PS is accurate but only if you take out the losses from driving the alternator, air-con compressor, greater pumping losses from cold oil (oil inlet temp needs to be 95 degrees odd for best power) and a few other bits. Generaly the engines once in a chassis are 10bhp down on the engine dyno figures i.e. circa 185bhp. With a good aftermarket ECU calibration which makes changes to ignition advance, fueling, VVT position, throttle position etc. etc. you'll see 3 - 5bhp peak but more importantly a much more useable torque curve as obviously once in the aftermarket we do not need to worry too much about Euro 5 compliance etc. and as such can "fill in" the bits the original OEM calibration team had to get skinny on to get the engine through emissions. As an OEM emissions compliance is the be all and end all of engine calibration with keeping the CAT within working range the number 1 priority as without an emissions pass you can't sell the engine/car!!

P.S. A good way to check how good the aftermarket calibrator is is to ask if the car will still meet Euro 5. If they claim it will then go somewhere else!

You'd be very silly to take it to one of these generic superchip places. Very silly.

If you haven't already paid for it mate, cancel and go to Rstuning or similar. You'll get a much better result.

Sorry guys, but my mates clio 197, has done dyno test, with stock car it showed 198bhp with 98 petrol..
He has done the full custom exhaust, and just the K&N intake filter, and with the custom remap the car hit 211bhp, with 208Nm of torque..
I think the remapping can work quiet well sometimes...

And by the way not all the renaults have less HP than quoted, for instance i've got Megane Rs 225, and the stock car takes 234bhp, as well as all the others....

Every "superchipped" car I have ever come across (NA) has had the ignition timing advanced by 1.5 degrees and when ran on independent rollers, they have made more or less bang on standard power.

Ps dont believe the rolling road they do after because the rollers are easily adjusted on RRs.

We had a 206 Gti mk1 that was "superchipped" 137hp standard, "chipped" it ran 136hp…

I just had a look at a clio file i pulled off ages ago, this one had 2.25 degrees haha.

Did you once own a tuning company by any chance? ;)

LOL!!! points taken guys, the re-map has not happened, obviously need to do more research in to this, it was just after having a EP3 Type R the 197 doesnt feel as quick so want to get it faster!!!

Fella, take a look through some of Icarus, Fred and RStunings posts, maybe even do a bit of research into their businesses. Then youll realise why people have been giving you, off the shelf 'chips' and whoever claims there awesomeness, a bit of stick.
If you want honest answers, based on fact and experience, ask away, but dont expect people to take you seriously if you clearly havent a clue what youre on about, and insist youre right in the face of significant expertise.

Plenty of people have tried to offer advice. No need to get your back up because you don't like it!

ive held my hands up, white flag!!
I'm having a map done at TDF (Icarus' place) tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes. He's one of only 2 people I personally would use. And he's near Cambridge (Kimbolton). Perfect for you!

Sweet please do, and thanks! should i wait until i have a exhaust system on it or will that matter? :S

Its up to you really, but if you have an exhaust fitted you should see slightly better gains and you will get a custom map which takes into account the exhaust

my ph1 is superchipped, my last one wasnt. I wouldn't say it makes a big difference, definately snappier and a bit smoother revving throughout. think its more 'driveable' than my last one. i didn't get it done tho, i bought it chipped. think i'd have rather spent the ££££ on coilovers myself. not bad tho.
