Swapping from a 172cup to a Valver

Ive finally got bored of my 172cup plus need the extra cash for a new flat so selling the cup and looking for a mint dark blue Valver.

this should be intersting - valvers are lurvely - although it wil probably fall appart quicker than straw house in a thunderstorm - do you have what it takes?!!!!!!

  Not a Clio

have you driven a valver before?

You might not like moving from a modern car to an older one.

Valvers are great cars but Ive never been in a cup to compare them.

dunno if youve had a valver before or not, but ive loved every minute of driving mine:D

if your after a decent example, check my one in the for sale section.
standard sports blue ,with factory leather.

Y would I want a VTS really cant bloody stand them.

Ive driven a couple of valvers and really enjoyed them even did a swap with a mate for a day cos he wanted summat smarter to goto a job interview so took my Cup

well 106 GTi then!!!

VTS/GTi is a newer car for around the same $$$. A few breathing mods gives it 160bhp! You cant expect those kind of gains on a Valver. Imo it is also more fun to drive than a Valver. Ask Dan hes gone from a Valver to a GTi and loves it.

I have a 172 Cup and my cousin (JONGSR4) used to have a VTS and believe me mate on a UK road there is sweet FA in it!!! Youd have to break the law big time to leave a VTS or GTi in a 172.

£3k will pick up a reasonable VTS nowadays

Itll be good the have another valver round here jason! It should stop me waving at random blue mk2 clios thinking its you. Have you seen the blue valver with 172 wheels which is on manorfield road? Id quite like to have that.

Well i owned a 106gti and im sorry to piss on your bonfire but valvers go better, and i have yet to see a 106gti produce 160bhp from just breathing mods as u put it.

that sort of power means big valve head and a good set of cams!

thats imho

But each to their own i suppose!

I went from a valver to a 172, and one day i hope to get another valver, the drive is so much more fun and raw in it.

  GT, Valver, BMW

ive got a valver and a cup,and im swapping from car to car every day theres things on the valver i wish was on the cup apart from the BHP theres really not much between them,if i was to choose it would probably be the valver

Sorry 160bhp was a typo  too late to change it.

I dont claim to be an expert but 140bhp:) with breathing mods are the figures ive heard people round on this very forum talk about. Its mentioned it "other marques" all the time! Something to do with the VTS having an awful setup as standard or something.

After all this is a discussion forum and imo a VTS/GTi is a better car than a Valver.

Each to their own though isnt it.

the VTS induction kit is really good. alot of people go back to standard from other ones.

the vts and gti engines can kick out anywhere from 120-135bhp standard..

4 branch manifold /decat exhaust system can take some up to and over 140, whereas some will only be 125..

think it depends if it was built on a friday/monday or in the week.. lol

i personally would rather have a 106gti/vts over a valver.. my mate had a valver and said a vts was as fast.

and the vts is newer and IMO looks more modern. GTI obviously has leather and alcantara interior which would be nice to have.

Depends where you live! I rarely see real VTSs - normally they are VTRs or West Coasts.

See more 172s than VTSs and valvers

theres quite a few round my way, although admittedly there are more vtrs, only seen 2 other valvers in the 7 weeks of owning mine:D

Do you mean me? I only had a 1.2! lol

But your right, GTis are great cars. I wanted a valver for ages, but in the end decided to go for the GTi! Its not that much more money, for quite a newer car. No rust problems, generally lower miles. The only had part is actually getting hold of one. They seem to sell really quickly!

People seem to have prejudges against VTS, often without even driving one.

There is so little between the VTS and 16v Clio.

Personally, I would sooner have a 16v Clio but seeing as they are too old and unreliable I got a VTS.

Youre doing this to save money? Expect plenty repairs on a 16v Clio.

My 5 year old VTS has only ever had a new alternator and one abs sensor.

imo standard for standard the VTS is more of a hoot to drive on the twists.

All are very good cars though and make Puntos, Corsas and fiestas of the same age look like milk floats in the handling stakes.

It always depends on the valver...there a lot of bad ones out and im not meaning rust...come up against a few mint examples and theyve been dog slow too. Choosing a VTS/GTI youre more likely to get to the power youre supposedly paying for and that aside they are very good. Valver...well take a good test drive...if its a good one itll be far better than a VTS/GTI...you dont have girly pedals either...

I had a freak Clio 16V that was making 155+bhp at the fly with minimal mods. It cost me a lot of time and money over the 2 years I had it, but it was a lovely, very raw car.

16Vs and Williams were notorious back in the day for being mileage sensitive giving over book power figures once loosened up. Autocar got 0-60 in 7.3 and 30-70 in 7.1 from their Valver, which back in 1991 was really something special in the hot hatch sector. Who knows what a decade and a half of only average care has though?
