Tailgate lifting struts

Hi Guys
Not sure if my tailgate lifting struts need replacing?
When I lift the tailgate to chest height on level ground - there is no effort from the struts in pushing up the tailgate further - is this normal?
When the tailgate is manually lifted to head height - there is a small effort from the struts to fully open the 'gate, opening the 'gate manually is easy and requires very little effort so there is definitely some push from the gas.
Not a big deal but this has caught me out a couple of times (ouch!)
Can someone compare the above action with theirs?
Cheers

On my 01 Ph1 non-sport the tailgate struts are absolutely terrible. I think they're broken, anything more than fully open, the tailgate will fall shut! I think they're just old structs that've lost most of their filling or whatever.

Mine are crap, often bang my head on my boot :( £18 on eBay though. Might get some new!
