Tappets

Car  Mk1 Clio 1.4 RT
Hi guys,

I recently purchased a 96 Clio 1.4 RT which has done 86K. Unfortunately there is a stange ticking sound which we presume are the tappets.

So here comes my question. How do we fix it? Change of oil? Does the engine need retiming? Can the tappets be adjusted? What oil should we use?

Thanks guys :)

well i dont know about that engine , but on some u can addjust the tappets , others have a hydrolic thing that sets it .

also does the tapping change when the engines warm / cold

Am not entirely sure the tapping changes. I didn't notice it at cold startup.

I heard that you cannot adjust them if they are hydrolic ?

They run hydraulic tappets which means is there is no way to adjust them, the oil should keep the tappets at 'zero lash' all the time.

Change the oil and filter, use some Wynnes engine tappet something or other, cant remember the name of the stuff, go to your local factors, they will sort you out..

Ive had to of these now mate and the Energy engines are generally tappy anyway sadly. As the guys have said you cant adjust them as they are hydraulic. Use some tappet treatment should quiet them down a bit

The Clio 1.4 rt has mechanical tappets which are adjustable. From the mileage I would say it would be a good idea to have them reset.

Yeah was gunna say, i did them on my old 1.4.........not to hard, just get a haynes and a set of feeler guages and a new rocker cover gasket, should be a 1-2h job max

If Nick Hilll says there adjustable there adjustable, hes the clio Guru round these parts! I wouldnt doubt his knowledge! ;)

Yeh you can adjust as said, ive done mine twice in 2years! The energy engine is just a noisy engine unfortunately. If you get a haynes book so you get the order and gapping correct though :D

My apologies. :clown:

I will tell my dad's friend he is wrong then. lol.

Considering I know nothing about cars, what does adjusting the tappets involve exactly?

According to auto-data they made 2/3 engine versions covering that model.

Will loud tappets cause damage to the engine?

Not in short term but in long term maybe?! Honestly you will know if your tappets are out of adjustment. They will make your car sound like an 80s diesel!

Basically you have 8 tappets 4 exhaust side, 4 inlet side. You basically turn the engine through the cycle stopping when you get to the certain intervals (look in haynes book). You make sure that the gaps on the tappets are correct. Ill try and send you a copy of what you need to do. Easier than explaining it :o

When they get noisey it means they are slightly worn, its not life threatening but if not adjusted you will probably damage them more i think.

rule of 9..........no.8 valve fully depressed......9-8=1....set tappet on no.1.

no.3 valve fully depressed...........9-3=6.....set tappets on no.6.......etc etc.

always way i was taught.
