Tappy engine and white smoke

Ive noticed that my engine sounds very tappy on tick over.

Also the last couple of days on start up ive noticed thick white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

anything to worry about??

check under your oil filler cap for mayonaise type stuff

also look to see if its taking coolant.

if so there is a chance ur headgasket could be going :(

might be worth getting the car looked at!

how do i check the coolant bit? Is it just checking if the level in the coolant reservior has gone down?

also what causes heads to go?

Check the expansion tank / bottle full of the water and see if its gone down

its difficult to say what could cause it to go if thats even the problem..

If you find Mayonaise type stuff under the oil filler cap take it to your local garage for a pressure test so they can tell if its the head gasket

1.2 16v head gaskets never go.. they all hold a small amount of "mayo" under the oil cap. this is just condensation in the engine.. take it for a good run and mite be an idea to go over 3.5k revs once in a while

I probably will take it over soon. Just dont want to blow up the engine. :quiet:

Its good for the engine to get a good thrashing every now and again otherwise it gets all coked up and will prob fail the emissions test come MOT time. Its fine when the engines warm, i give my mum's polo a 6k clear out every now and again otherwise it runs as rough as a badgers arse.

If you dont drive it hard then the white smoke may just be condensation in the exhaust. It can build up to a fair volume if you drive like a faggot, if you've ever followed a coffin dodger in a rover 200 or micra and seen water pouring out of the tailpipe its the same problem ;)

Go give it a good spanking and get it nice and hot!

I don't think theres any problem with the engine, Lusty do you know when the limiter cuts in?

no. I had an incident about 2 months ago when I gave it full throttle to overtake a van and went to change up and the throttle got stuck under the mat so for a couple of seconds it was hitting the rev limiter, but I couldn't tell where abouts the limiter was. Around 6200 I think.

Since then I haven't dared rev it too much anymore.

Oh rite, I had that, cut a section out of the mat now and sewed the edging back on, looks fine, felt a rite tit at the time though. Yeah its at 6200rpm. No point reving it that high I find, runs out of steam at 5500...
