Taxing SORN car

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
ok i bought a car a good while ago from a guy, when i bought it the car was already out of tax by a few months, the car was registered in my name for a while and i never recieved any letters to say that the car needed taxing/sorning etc so i had no reason to belive it wasnt declaired SORN like i had been told

The new owner has just tried to tax it but has been told that it was never sorn, but has never recieved anything teling him this, now its been over a year since its tax originally ran out, an neither of us in his time have recieved any letters.
Hes been told he must cough up £200 before he can tax it. but am i right in saying he can just prove he bought the car after the tax ran out and sorning isnt his responsibility the fine will be waivered,

Yeah but if he proves his innocence then they might come after you for the fine because you're the previous owner?.

Sounds like it wasn't really SORN when you bought it contrary to what you were told . As he is the new owner and i'm assuming that you filled out the section on the V5 transfering ownership it's now his responsibilty .
