Temperature Gauge on a ph2 172

  Sport 172
Hi,

When I first got the car when the engined had warmed up the temperature gauge needle was half way. Now it sometimes goes to half way but other times it only goes a quarter of the way etc.

Just wondering whats wrong with it. Never goes higher than half.

Thanks

Carlos

mind you, halfway is good. When running the car whilst cold, you'll see the temp going up, but you can also see when the themostat (?) opens up to let the water run through the system, after which you'll see your temp gauge go down again.. this happens a couple of times untill your engine's warm

watch your gauge when engine is cold, take her for a drive and you'll see what i mean

When I first got the car within about 10 - 15 mins or so it would go to half way and be there all the time. Now it sometimes doesn't even get to half way at all. Even if I have been driving for about an hour or something

this could be faulty thermostat . i hope i'm stating this correctly, i'm dutch :S .
It's the valve in the watercoolantsystem that opens up to let water through when it reaches temp.

could be it

not a big deal

no not me, i remember with my Vauxhall it had to be done with cambelt-change.
On most cars i believe it's easier than this.

up for people who know

The coolent temp sensor has failed its a simple job doens't take long pkus a new sesnor whcih are cheap ring renault delaers for a defininitive price.
Also check the loom as some can fray etc.

If you look on the right hand side of the engine wheel there coolent pipe comes out yreach behind and round that you'll find the sensor its the only thing plugged into the area.
