Tempermental Speedo

hey guys, i drive a 2000 clio sport and the speedo decides to stop working at times. recently its just died and ive had to judge my speed accordingly to other cars :S but the day after it works again. anyone any ideas if its the dials or the actual speedo down by the gear box??
