The ’drilling the airbox trick’

Anyone know anything about this wonderful creation?



Hah, anyway avoiding getting an Induction Kit (according to professional tuners these dont really give a perfomance gain on a standard car). The cheaper option is drilling holes in the airbox, anyone know if you can buy spare airboxs from renault incase it f*cks up?

The reason open induction kits dont work is cause they pick up all the heat from the engine, if you drill holes in the box the same is gonna apply, you dont say what car you have but the 172 one is quite good as it is.

If your going to do anything, just buy a performance filter for the box. Cheapest and best option. Dont do the drilling. Cant believe ppl still do sh*t like this!

Does this include an induction kit thats been relocated? As in i got a pipercross filter on the k-tec relocation pipe all joints sealed with samco sport silocone joints and clips, it seems pretty well sealed and its made the car more resposive at lower revs.

Being relocated into the front grille as much as possible it gets a pretty good cold air feed.

Ive heard drilling the airbox is pretty bad for youre engine?

The 172 engine is very supceptable to heat (all engines are but the 172 particularly) so a cold air intake will help but may pick up more dirt so the filter needs cleaning more so if dont clean it more it reduces your power.

The most important thing about intake air is that it is cold when it gets to the valves and pistons. If you have cold air at the filter which then heats up along its run the the valves then its a waste.

Drilling the airbox is a waste IMO there may have been advantages yrs ago with poor design but not realy now adays. The ides is to get more air into the engine but if your getting warm air only then its wasted.

Any air which bypasses the filter is bad as well. The filters there for a reason it does rob some potential power as it restricts intake but removoing all the dirt from the air is more important.

Theres nothing really wrong with drilling the airbox, providing the holes dont face the engine. With a cramped bay like a 172s id expect heat would be a problem but with many cars a better filter within the box and a few holes can give you no loss and a great noise, its also hundreds of pounds cheaper than an aftermarket filter which tends to give unnoticeable gain.

Drilling the airbox on any car is silly, you really are just sucking in hot air fromt eh engine bay, no matter where you put the holes and where you put some ducts.

what about drilling the airbox and then having a cold air feed from the grill to the hole/holes....surely this would work ok

Yes you do... But you will lose power overall.
