Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

If you are into video editing Abi, you could do much worse than look at some of the early demo scene amiga work for some ideas on how a variety of disciplines can be used in video.

The Demo scene is something I've always been into and it got me into creating digital art years ago.
Basically demo coders, graphic designers, artists, musicians etc etc from all over get together and create 'demo's' of their abilities using their preferred hardware.

Ignore the low poly count of the 3d, these are realtime rendered scenes which take infinite programming knowledge with 12 year old technology, this demo won TBL, black lotus an award at the 2006 Assembly over anything produced on a PC!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wtMEBPWeMo

All the weird names that keep popping up are either shouts out to fellow coders or credits for the guys who worked on it but the fonts and the graphic style, like most of Black Lotus' stuff is very good imo. Much more interesting than just fades / screen wipe etc.

yes, i do like that kind of stuff but again in moderation, too much cgi will make it like cheese, this is what im talking about with the beat in sync with the motion, its within the first two seconds so dont blink

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

look at this aswel, they have put a camera on a remote control car, imagine 4 different colour clios in single file following eachother on a straight piece of road at about 20mph, you could drive the RC underneath them all, or weaving in and out of the cars which would give amazing new angles, and its really simple

Not so much the cgi, I mean the titles and the way typography is used to enhance the footage.

Very good example of classy editing, I like the camera moves in that gone in 60 seconds vid, it also well put together.... but I feel not such a great intro for that film, which is about speed; even the name of the film suggests the car is going to be nicked quickly, then they uses these slow pop up and fade away bits of typography which imo do nothing to add a feeling of urgency, it felt more like 'I'm going grey in 112 seconds waiting for something to happen' than gone in 60 seconds.

yes but its strawberries and cream really isnt it, having a slow intro for a fast paced film. i love the pic up in speed in the first two seconds then slowing it down again, speed aint fast without the slow if you get me, kind of like the cool insane action movie star with a deep slow voice, like charcoal under a door, mmmmmm bruce willis in Die Hard mmmmmmmm;)

no lets say it, yipy kayaymuthafuka lol, did you read the RC post, i like the idea of it and yeah i love the fish eye lens too, and have you seen how some surf films are shot, like in sepia with frames takenout so it looks jerky, i like that style too

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

Good idea but hard to pull off i think, if you get footage from different people the style maybe different, also if you want something to look really good higher end cameras might be needed. plus it will take alot of time to put it together (aswell as you want it) other than that its a really good idea and wouldnt mind getting involved.

Are you in the industry/ student btw?

your in!

yeah the different styles is what will make this as it wont be monotonous, but i aggree about the different cameras, i say rule of thumb no mobile phone vids, everything else we will get away with because of the quality in youtube, and every1 doesnt have to film with a special lense at the end of the day, its what they point it at

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

Used to be more into skate stuff myself, they tend to use ultra distorted lenses to get extra perpective, but I know what you mean about the surf vids they are pretty stylish too, I also quite like it when dramatic pauses are put into a film with a break in the sound track at a pivotal moment.

The first couple of minutes of Lock Stock (when they are running away from doing some dodgy street trading) are nicely filmed, grainy footage with those nice breaks and slow mo. You could get some nice footage at a airfield meets and compose shots with nice little breaks and slow mo with close up's etc

Are you in the film industry / studying...?

Yhea i'd be nice to have the gear!!!

As a venture involving a few people, it'd also be a good portfolio piece to show clients what you can achieve as a colaboration...

yes airfield to get the shot under four rolling clios, believe it or not i dont have no education in films, i just watch them. thats why i refused to go to college to learn about film making because imo they warp your natural sense of imagination into their own style which is taught to you by 1 fekin guy, any way yeah love those pauses you are on about, this is my fave example just after the 1 min mark, awesome

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

Uni's and colleges give you a good start, you have to have it there already though, you cant really be talght to think creativly...

I started learning after I left tbh. What a college will do is try it's best to give you a commercial edge which will find you work and unfortunatly that is what the industry demands, commercial, the people with the cash rarely seems to want to take risks with something different.

I make my money shadowing other styles, it's what is required of me (usually by art directors who are artistically challenged ;) )... I could get arsey about the dumb way the industry works but in the end there is only so long you can have artistic morals before you realise the bills arn't being paid.

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

Your way of viewing the job is much the same as mine; get paid...>>next!

I'm a 'commercial' illustrator and concept designer by trade. But when work is low I do other stuff too.

edit:

I'm Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Maya but everything I do is drawn by hand first.
I neeeeed to learn some flash and web stuff really, there is money in that! And I'd like to make the jump to vid / dvd stuff too, if anything it'll help me put together a nice portfolio. Saving for a nice G5 pro at the mo.

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

bit from here bit from there thats all tarantino is at the end of the day, its what you put up on the screen and how your telling it thats individual, there will be a full stop on cgi soon because you can a put a camera wherever you want so the ideas will run dry

hay. feeb:eek:

I dont think cgi will stop but either split off more into a different genre like toy story but for adults or be able to intergrate better into live motion picture.

Theres a new film with angalina jolie in, thats fully cgi.

That effect has been used quite a lot, tbh I think the future is hand drawn animation, that's where I want to see advancements made with all this new technology.

Don Bluth's animation work is up there with the best. He's an ex disney prodigy who has never recieved the recognition that someone of his talents deserves. check out 'Balto' the scene where he fights the bear is f**king pure genius. The 'camera' moves that are used in hand drawn animation are mental, that is where a layout artist and animator are really tested to the maximum.. Just watched scene with the avalanche now, so stylish.

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

why has there never been a multi million pound action film shot on normal video cameras? it would look so real it would be fukin gripping to the audience

Yeah disney has/had some of the best, some of the japanesse stuff is up there to.

The studios dont have the balls to back it, the money comes from business men with no artistic flare or adventure

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

Had a laugh looking back at my old vids. Just uploaded them.

Steve's 172 Turbo

The 'right here, right now' bit of this vid fits really nice with the still shots then tops off nicely with a bit of zoomed footage, quite stylish, it's also a very nice car.

yes, i missed that video, ooops but thats exactly it, if we had say 20 of them in different style, race track, RC car on airfield etc, we'd easily get enough to fill 4 minutes

note; i like 45 seconds to 59 in that video, pretty stable shots aswel

Re: Feeb video editors, the CS montage

I was fortunate to work in the same company as a couple of superb layout artists in the past one guy was ex cosgrove hall, the other disney. I've also worked with disney approved stills artists and I can honestly say the skills needed to perform at that level are immense.
Don Bluth though blows all of them out of the water though! He really is a genius, the themes behind most of his animations are quite dark, this might be one reason why it is not as commercial as disney stuff, in a way like Tim Burton is to stop frame.
Katsuhiro Otomo is a genius too, so I agree the japanise do animation well, although I think they have concept design sussed and their animation is a bit of a marmite style but they are great at composing a shot and pushing a shot to extremes (the whole race scene in akira).

That's old school shizzle. They make good use of that in Jaws.
