The Death of the Trophy and its Reincarnation

  Clio 182 Trophy #193
A Massive thanks to Mike at Rentech who went far far further than he had to to get my car back on the road after more incompetence by Renault...

As some of you may know, The Trophy died a few weeks ago and here is the story...

Well, driving along the M27 on the way home from work the other week, my oil pressure light came on. Before i was able to move to the hard shoulder the engine had cut out and wouldnt turn over.
Called the AA who took the car to Inchcape in Southampton. I waiting 3 days before one of their "MASTER" techs got round to looking at the engine, and within a few minutes he managed to diagnose that it wasnt a warranty problem and it was because the oil filter wasnt put back on properly when the car was serviced. They also told me it would cost me a minimum of £5500 to sort out. I was shocked to say the least when i heard this because the car has been maintained by Rentech and i felt certain Mike wouldnt let this happen.
I contacted Mike and explained what Renaut had told me and before i had even finished my sentence, he told me that he would fix the car at his cost and how sorry he was. This was the start of fantastic customer serivce :) By the end of that day Mike called me back to say that he had ordered the engine from Renault and it would be with him on the friday. On friday afternoon i got a call from Mike to say the engine was there and he would be awaiting my car.
The car arrived with him on the Saturday, Mike worked on Sunday, until late on Monday and Tuesday into his own time to sort my car out and put the new engine in the car and it was ready for my collection on the Wednesday.
When i got to Rentech, Mike explained the true story of what had happened, being that the Oil Pressure Regulator valve had failed, overpressuerd the filter and that the seal had blown, hence the loss of oil. This should have been diagnosed by Renaults "Master" Tech and fixed under warranty. This has now left Mike out of pocket for something that he shouldnt have needed to fix if Renault had diagnosed the problem correctly.
I can only extend my thanks to Mike for the speed at which he got my car back on the road and the extremely high level of customer service that he gave me. Yet another 5* performance from Rentech.
I hope that they can sort this out with the monkeys at Renault.

excellent stuff :) Glad to hear you got it sorted. Be interesting to see ifRentech can get any refund for the hard work.
Im assuming RUK only allow dealers and non of the specialist garages to do warranty work which is a shame by the sounds of it !

That's top drawer on Rentech's part! Certainly deserves the reputation he has on here....

Where does he stand now the engine is out of the car on claiming things back now though?

Well the dealers refused to do it under warranty blaming it on Rentech. Says alot about the competency of Renaults "Master Tech's" They are solely trained on how to sherk out of Warranty Work!

I cant comment on that for certain reasons, but from what i gather Mike is doing everything he can to get things sorted. I can only continue to recomend him VERY highly to everyone who owns a Renault!

Thats very good on Mikes part. Top man! :approve:

Renault are taking the absolute piss, hope he gets his money back for the new engine.

Been in contact with my legal advise line and was basically told as I done the work on the car I dont have a leg to stand on, what I should have done was refused to do the work.
I'm gona send a letter to Renault customer services next week but dont hold out much hope as I expect that will end up in the bin.
As I said to Theo I'm more than happy to own up to any mistakes I make and honesty is the only way IMO, but when its not your fault it really annoys me big time.
Still at least Theo is happy and have a brand spankin new engine in his car :)

Ile pop a picture up of the engine oil filter a bit later so you can see how swolen it is.

PS anyone wana buy a rebuild trophy engine??

So Mike, could you not have diagnosed the problem before you did all that work? why did you only find what the true cause was after the work had been done?

Sounds like it all got rushed abit, feel sorry for you guys! sounds like a right mess.

TBH id dont think you have a hope in hell getting your money back from Reno, but good luck to you, hope it works out.

I had a good relationship with the dealer, so trusted what they said and it was only once the engine was on the floor that it was blatant what caused the failure.
I had already agreed to do the work as well.

fair play to Mike and at worst it has given you some very good publicity even at a substatial cost in finances and time ! I notice this is running on a renaultsport forum too so be interesting to get some response from Renault about it :)

good luck in getting some charges back from them !

I am incredibly appreciative of all the time and effort that Mike put into my car, both company time and his own personal time.

I never had a hesitation to recommend Rentech to a Renault owner, and this has just continued to boost my confidence in owning a Renault, knowing that there are people out there who genuinely care about their customers. I extend my thanks once again to Mike and the guys and i hope that Renault will take note of all of this.

Had a new gearbox fitted at Rentech, top blokes, when the brand new one from renault broke (less than 1000miles shocking) replaced it no probs :)

Unlucky for the big loss you're taking on the work you did, typical Renault monkeys. Sounds like great customer service tho.

Good comments and a happy ending! Mike's taken a kicking in the wallet, but I think it's only reinforced the positive views that people on this forum have of both him and his business.

Has this thread been repeated on ClioTrophy.net as well? Spread the word, I say! :)
