The Definitive Eibach Post (172)

I wanted to lower my Mk1 172 a little bit to get rid of the 4x4 look it comes with as standard. Searching through the forum Id heard nothing but praise for the Eibach kits but there also seemed to be some confusion around them as they do two different models, so heres a brief summary for anyone else who got confused (like me).

For starters, K-Tec (http://www.k-tecracing.comwww.k-tecracing.com) seem to be the best source of reliable information on the subject. Eibachs brochures list the springs but have the approximate drop listed for all models of Clio, whereas the 172 is actually lower to start with, so ignore the Eibach brochure figures!...

- The Sportline springs are red and lower the 172 by 30mm front and back (K-Tecs website figures, but I assume they are correct).

- The Pro Kit contains black springs which lower the 172 by 20mm front and 15mm rear as suggested on K-Tecs website. I have also measured this drop on my own car and can confirm this to be the case. The box unhelpfully says things like Sportliche Sicherheit so I can understand why some people are getting them confused with the Sportline springs.

Impressions: I decided to go for the Pro Kit springs. The car seemed a bit lower, but nothing dramatic - it still looks like it was designed this way (rather than being slammed with alloys inside the arches) but generally seems to have a more purposeful stance. I wondered whether to go for the Sportline kit or not and Im still not sure, but was put off by the potential amount of lowering at the back and my need to occasionally carry lots of passengers. Maybe Ill get some coilovers in a year or so? Anyhow, after fitting I drove slowly back home (lots of standing water and wanted to let things bed-in first) and noticed the ride was slightly firmer (not much) and it felt more perky, alert and responsive even on the low grip roads. I went out today and on dry roads the car felt truly awesome round the bends: Deliberately piling into a corner with too much speed, I was stunned when it just loaded up and went round tightly, where it would previously have begun to wash wide. Ive only driven about 50 miles with them but Im well chuffed so far.

Heres some before and after pics for reference (sorry about the size)

LOL, well I havent cleaned it yet this year - just seeing how long it can go for without looking sh*tty (note to self: clean car now as people are beginning to notice)

  Clio II and Grand Modus

Had my Pro-kit for about a year now, and it is a great spring kit!!! Very good handling, but just not low enough for me anymore;) I´m getting H&R adjustable soon, hope they are just as good as the Eibach´s!!!

Yup, had mine on for ooooooo erm ages (2002) and still think that value-for-money-wise they are one on the best things you can do.

Ive got the sports and koni adjustable dampers on my car + some geometry changes. I agree with Mike: Best mod by far.

cant seem to find Pro Kit on ktec website?? err.. that looks really nice and iam amazed at my new tyres for cornering + grip cant imagine it being any better but i bet it is.. im deffo getting some Pro Kit but is i get REnault Dealer to fit i should be ok with my waranty?????????

just orderd some ... never bought anything for any car ive had, dont know how il fit em thanks for the great pics + advice M8

I definitely agree - its subtle in the pics, but honestly the car seems to look more purposeful in real life. I deliberately tried to get unflattering pics (totally side on) rather than nice low down moody shots which would make it appear lower than it is, if you get what I mean!

  172 Cup

Ive got a set of Eibach Sportline springs on my mk1 172 - I think there is a noticable difference in both ride height and appearance. They are quite hard especially on some of your British roads.

Will post some pics tomorrow.

cliotuRS - I asked Renault about fitting mine they wanted about £300 - took the car to a local garage he did the lot for £40 cash in hand.

Took him just over an hour Renault says itll take 6???

It does affect the warranty but if your getting the black Pro Kit ones cant see how they would really know unless they removed them - in our case they could see straight away as ours are red.

McShug, Any chance of some pics on here too then so that people can compare them? Ive still got a few days to send mine back if I decide Ive made the wrong choice! ;) A nice full-on side shot would be ideal... Thanks mate.

Those springs are good value for whats gained in handling. Im still well chuffed with mine.

Mine have settled further/lower, than when I did the before and after photos, obvious really!
