The mk1 Phase 3 is the most reliable Clio

  BMW 328 Ci

I found these statistics from a site called reliability index. I dont think it has stuff about the very newest clio.

Based on data gathered from millions of pounds worth of claims handled by Warranty Direct every year, the Reliability Index brings you the most comprehensive overview of cars on the road today.

Analysis shows that one in four cars suffer some degree of mechanical failure during years 4 and 5 of ownership - ironically just as the manufacturers UK standard warranty expires. Now you can see the information the manufacturers dont want you to see.

The Reliability index takes into account all factors of a repair, the cost of the parts and the frequency of failures - Average is 112 which means that if the figure for the car you are looking at has a higher than average index (118) the indication is that that car is less reliable than the average, if however there is a lower than average index (60) the reliability is better. Separately to this figure you can also look at the average cost of repairs for a particular make or model, a car with a poor good index and a high average cost (£500) would imply that the frequency of failure is low however when it does fail the bill will be a lot more than the average.
I think these statistics have a few years on them now.

And here is a report about all small cars from the site.

Finding the most reliable small car

Ford may be celebrating its Centenary this year, but the manufacturer can also pat itself on the back for consistently producing the most reliable small car on the market - the three door Ka.

According to Warranty Directs Reliability Index (www.reliabilityindex.co.uk), the Blue Ovals little runner tops the tree of Britains most robust motors with an average repair bill of just £110.93 and an Index rating (calculated as cost of repair vs number of visits to the garage) of just 22. This compares to the small car segment average repair bill of £209.58 and Index rating of 68.3.

The Kas consistent build quality since its 1996 launch does, however, hide the fact that Nissan Micras built between 1996 and 2000 (including the first cosmetic revision since 1993 launch and 1998 overhaul) boast an unbeatable Index rating of just 4.1 based on average garage bills of £101.05.

Similarly, although Volkswagens Polo comes in second overall, buyers plumping for a 1994 launch year edition are three times less likely to suffer mechanical failure than vehicles built the following year.

Italys Fiat Punto is probably the most improved small car with the second generation (launched in 1999) the third most reliable on the road with an Index of 21.9. In comparison, the original Punto - first seen in 1994 - delivers a less appealing rating of 77.6.

Propping up the small car league is the Rover 200 (1995 to 1999) with a Reliability Index rating of 86.4. Next on the ladder is Peugeots 106 which records an average repair bill of £252.44 after spending 3.5 hours on the ramps every time it visits the garage.

Although the Renault Clio, fifth from bottom - delivers an above average Index rating of 77.2, it pays to hunt down a "Phase 3" 1996-1998 version which boasts an Index of just 30 and an average repair bill of £103.05.

The Ford Fiesta has been Britains best selling supermini for years. The Mk V version, which first appeared in 1999, is the seventh most reliable on the road with an Index of 25.4. This compares favourably to the previous generation (Mk IV), which records a rating of 50.1 and an average of £181.40 to fix according to Warranty Direct claims.

Finally, Peugeots Coventry built 206 is not only the most popular privately bought car in the UK, but its also the fourth most reliable on the roads today with an Index rating almost half of its predecessor, the 205.

I just think its funny the way the 97 one spend on average 1.6 hours on the ramps in the garage while the 2000 one spends 8 hours on average

yes mine never broke down either but got a faulty earth at the multiplug - didnt stop the car running though. Only let me down once and that has cos the battery has dead which can happen to any car really. Repairs was only a cracked suspension spring and the very common brake flex pipe.
