The redline!!

What does this actually mean?

Does it mean "This is the point where I blow up, so keep me out of the Redline zone" or does it mean

"Keep me in the redline zone because that is where I produce maximum power and I enjoy being there"

  Clio v6
At some point in your driving lessons your instructor will explain this. Good luck in passing your test.

However, even with these electronic protection systems, a car is not prevented from redlining through inadvertent gear engagement. If a driver accidentally selects a lower gear when trying to shift up, the engine will be forced to rapidly rev-up to match the speed of the drivetrain. If this happens while the engine was at high rpms, it may dramatically exceed the redline. For example, if the operator is driving close to redline in 3rd gear and attempts to shift to 4th gear but unintentionally puts the car in 2nd by mistake, the transmission will be spinning much faster than the engine, and when the clutch is released the engine’s rpm will increase rapidly.

I did that in my cup, i was in high 4th, went to hit it in 5th but went in to 3rd...
Opps :D

wont the rev limiter stop the damage from happening?

It will jump it!!

People put cars in the redline because they want maxperformance, but what some people forget is that the PEAK power is about 1000 less than the limiter

  clio 200 F4Rt
the redline or rev limiter cuts the spark from the engine, stopping it from revving higher, and in thoery causing damage.

99% of engines can rev a good 500-1000 rpm higher than thier redline safely, but manufactures give themselves a safety net for obvious resaons.

Hitting the redline now and then wont damage your engine, bouncing your car off it for 30mins straight may well....

so if you go past peak performance then the car will start to accelerate slower? Does anyone knmow where peak performance is in my 1.2 16v?

Power will still gain, but at a slower rate than if you was to change gear.
Probabley about 6100 - 6250

id have thought if an engine can spin at 7k for example for 1 second then why cant it keep it up for say 30 seconds?

rolling down a very steep hill - lol

go away :rasp:

Depends on the car!!

Compare that between a new ford KA and a Porsche GT3 RS
I would say you could bounce the limited all day in the gt3 with no damaged caused.
Another story for the KA

Limiter is 6200rpm on the 1.2 16v there is really no point in taking it abover 6000rpm and i only nudge that once every now and again, every day driving my car doesn't see more than 3200rpm I wouldn't imagine.
And to those making comments about 17mph in first, and down a big hill etc, grow up. If you accept the 1.2 for what it is, they are good cars, they are not comparable to an rs, but they are nippy enough to build some confidence in as a first car and still have abit of fun.

Dry those peeps princess, my comment was made with my tongue firmly in my cheek. my last car was a 1.2 Clio and I know how good they are.

Actually its a good question.

It used to mean "bang rattle rattle rattle splutter silence", but these days it just means you're being silly and its time change up into the next gear if you want to go faster.

Engines used to actually blow up. You'd hot up a car and only find you'd hotted it up too far when the rod came out through the side of the crank case. These days they have rev limiters, and you have to grossly abuse them, like changing down when you mean to change up, to permanently damage them.

Agree with all the above apart from only taking it to 6krpm every now and and again!

They go through the gears like normal up to fourth, as most are run in fourth gear for the figures.

Your car will not blow up on a rolling road.
