the state of some cars.

I have been looking for a clio 172 for the last 3 weeks now and to be honest with you some of these cars are F****** sheds. how can someone let there car get into such a state. few things i have seen

exuast droping off when i go to view the car
inside totaly pitted
chips in paintwork over an inch long
no tread on the front tires
80000 on the clock and still hasent had the belts done
not serviced for over 40000 miles
dents in roof doors bonnets u name it.

and thats just few. i have seen novas in better shape than most of these cars. every single car i have been to see the person on the email or phone say there car is in very good condition. get there and its a shed i have £4500 to spend on a car. most of the garages round my way are asking stupid money for them. all i want is a phase 2 to with decent miles and thats been looked after. not to much to ask for is it.

rant over.

Some people see their cars to get them from A to B, even if it's a nice car they just don't care about them.

Why not ask the seller a load of questions on the car before going round to see it ??

Call them up, ask away- get a feel for it, if they don't seem to know or have an idea, don't bother going.
Even if they are not sure on a few things, they can always go & look at their bills etc (assuming they have them) and call you back.

Otherwise your just wasting your time.

Chill out mate, you'll find one, some people only see them as a means of transport, and others can't always afford to put all the stuff right. My bro who doesen't give a monkeys about cars has a dent and scratch in every panel bar the roof, it's an R reg Mondeo and he has no interest in cars atall. When I had my 172 I really looked after it but had a couple of parking dings in the door and stone chips on the front, you either drive them and use them or stick it in a museum if you want just off the production line looks!

People still lie to you on the phone though. No marks and dents etc, get there and it is a different matter. To many chancers or people with very different standards.

  CLIO 172 EXCLUSIVE
took me two months to find the one i wanted. youve just got to hang on til you find a good un. trawl every selling site you can. if using ebay look at sellers feedback and see if they have bought parts for car etc. i found one that looked mint then looked at sellers bought items - hed bought new bumber and someone elses log books!!

  Clown Car
Every single car i have been to see the person on the email or phone say there car is in very good condition.

When i was looking for a 182, my brother and i ended up at this independant garage to have a look at an 05 plate racing blue 182(less than a year old), from the pictures the car looked spotless, i spoke to the sales manager and he said the car was perfect with no problems, so we went to see it, a good 50 mile trip each way.

From a distance the car looked fine, but as you got nearer to it you started to see the scuffs, small dents, and scrathes, every panel on the car had swirl marks, looking at other cars in the showroom they all had swirl marks and scratches aswell, we were just leaving when we spotted their monkey in the yard cleaning cars with what looked like a yard brush dipped into a bucket of minging ditch water.

We pointed out to the owner of the garage that whoever was washing their cars was damaging the paint, specifically refering to the RB 182, his reply was "The car is not new, it is used, it has been on the road and these things are to be expected, most cars are like that."

I told him to go and look at the paint work on my car(1 year old Megane at the time), you will not find a single dent, scratch or swirl mark, with that attitude from dealers you can see why some people think their sheds are minters.

Agreed Rich, in my experience though, I can almost always tell by the seller on the phone (thier whole manner etc gives it away in general)
I also ask the most stupidest questions - which only someone who has an idea will know (did it for my last car & the current one)
The adverts people write are a good indication too.

that's the biggest nause about looking at s/hand cars - you can work with people who aren't particularly into cars but people who lie are just such a PITA

one of the cars i went to look at before i bought mine was advertised on here; drove from Bristol to Leicester to have a look (after having asked the seller some fairly searching questions over the 'phone); get there and it's quite clear that, even before looking at the mechanicals, the bodywork is in a right state for its age/mileage. the clown didn't seem remotely bothered that i'd driven all that way either. muppets.

You made an offer without going to see it first ? Your supposed to do that if you wanna buy it.
Not being funny but anyone who asks me would you take x for it (without even bothering to come & see it) & i'm asking y I'll tell them to stop wasting my time - if they come round & are genuinely interested we go from there.

i offered him £4500 to end the auction early as the reserve is £5500.
he said yes. i said i would come and look at the car first before he ended the auction. as i said the car looked well looked after from the pics and from what he siad on the phone it sounded like a good car. the car is only 20 miles from me so not far.

Ok, not being funny but any mk2 172 within your budget will be a heap. 4.5k won't get you a decent mk2 at all, you'll need a grand, maybe even 1.5k more tbh.

You'll get a nice mk1 172 for the money, just not a mk2 (yet)

True, you will need a least 5.5-6k for a well looked after phase 2 minter.
