These 50 litre fuel tanks

  172 Cup

If we have fuel tanks with a capacity of 50 litres why cant I get more than 42ish in at the most?

I have driven some 30 miles with the warning light on and still it would only take 42 litres of petrol.

Are the quoted figures for the fuel tank made up or is there still a good 8 litres left when the light comes on?

Ive just filled up. My trip computer showed I had around 30 miles worth of fuel left, the fuel gauge was resting on the red, and the tank only took 39 litres to fill it!!

Run your car until the tank is empty, if you want to find out for definite that its 50 litres. Just make sure youve got some fuel in a petrol can handy :p

an a new engine aswell, you should never let your car get to empty !

shouldnt really run it low either cos it drags all the crap from the bottom of the tank

I normally fill up after about 400 ish miles.. once ran for about 50 miles with the fuel light on, thought it was about to give up on me, but no!

It is bad to let your tank run right to empty though, especially with diesels for some reason, that Im not entirely sure of!

Clare, coz it lets all the crap at the bottom of the fuel tank get sucked into the fuel line or something... always best to fill up when car reaches 1/4 tank

filled my GTT up from 1/4 today.. and cost £30!! thats using 4 star petrol tho!

super unleaded may be cheaper

Do that diagnostic test where you hold the column stork in when you turn the electrics on, press the speedometer reset button and it should tell you how many litres of fuel you have left.

isnt it just a load of b****cks about dragging crap through the fuel lines, I mean we all have plastic tanks nowadays, not rusty crappy ones of the odl days! Plus there is a filter there to stop any coming through, aint there?

Diesels shouldnt be ran dry cos you have to bleed the entire system when it happens or the car aint going anywhere, stupid bloody things that they are!

Never checked the litres amount but manage to get about £34 in the 1.2 at about 78p per litre. Even when ran into the red I aint managed to get higher than that.

In the Astra I have managed to put 47.5 litres into the 47 litre tank though, that was a close call! Just started to splutter as I reached the first petrol station in about 40 miles!

Thats true about the diesel engines having to be bleed up much like your oil system at home when it runs dry of oil.

Often happens to customers in work when we hire out forklifts
