Im thinking of maybe getting a 197 this year, dont know to much anout them tho,so what are peoples views on them, good bad etc?,at the moment i have a 172 Cup just to compare.

They're great. Don't feel as raw or as quick either. Not saying they're not as quick but I would say to drive they feel less like an event and more comfortable. Easier to live with daily, far better for a long commute etc and driving daily and longer distances.

If it's a daily driver doing a lot of miles you'll love it. For a weekender or a toy just save your money or put it into itbs or a turbo for the 172 in my eyes.

The 197 is just more grown up and feels a bit more civilised.

I've had both, 172, 197 and 182 trophy and I now have a r26

Both cars have pros and cons, as said the 1*2 do feel more "raw" but that's because there made of a lower grade of tin foil and Tupperware ;)

I liked both cars for different reasons, 1*2 is a hoot, something about it feels real go kart/hooligan but for me personally now days 90% driving it was a chore.

The 197 on the other hand has an awesome chassis and so balanced and planted but the suspension setup is much more advanced with its swivel hub setup.

Granted it doesn't feel as alive as the 1*2 but there bout the same performance wise and I felt way quicker on a B road in my 197

I like the 197 can look really good woth few chpice mods

mpg doesnt warrant the bhp these achieve and the gearboxes dont have a great reputation

I liked mine although I never got above 28mpg and ruined it with a decat.

yeah being i drive the cup every day, would be nice something with bit more comfort & easier to drive.

either be grown up & get an Audi A3 Tdi sline or sport,or keep to something fun

Love mine; feel superb on the fast flowing A and B roads. Driving position is excellent. Never really driven a 182 or 172 in anger so can't comment too much on the differences but i would 100% recommend a 197 to anyone. The turn in is superb and the nose goes exactly where you want it to.

My car is running a KTEC Decat pipe and Pipercross panel filter, the filter is one of the best £ for £ mods you can do IMO. I think the throttle response improved a little when i purchased this and can't say i notice a flat spot on my car despite not receiving a re map.

Best thing to do is go and drive a Cup and Non Cup equipped car and see what you prefer. The Cup is great when you want to have fun but it is quite harsh most of the time. Gearboxes as already mentioned can be in an issue; but if you master heel 'n' toe and don't snap change in to gears then you're not being too harsh on the 'box. Flexi pipes can be an issue and its quite expensive to put right (about the same as a belt service at a specialist). The Recaro's are nice sought after option but the standard seats are still very supportive.

The 197 (unmapped to accomodate) suffers a terrible flat spot when a decat is fitted
As said in my post above; i haven't noticed this. If you decat and remove the silencer then yes you do have an awful falt spot. I plan to possibly have mine mapped at RS Tuning later this year anyway. Decat IMO is worth it for the added noise and pops when you rev match your down changes :D

Agreed. 1st is too short to notice the flat spot. Second gear approaches to roundabouts would often catch me out though. Flat spot on mine was 2.5 - 3k rpm.

On the other hand you could make it pop n bang if you changed gear quick enough in the flat spot which was pretty cool :)

I used to have an R27 and honestly prefer it in every way to my Ph1. It did cost four times as much though...

The 197s are considerably more confidence inspiring and do feel safer on the road. I had a decat magnex exhaust with no centre silencer and to me, it sounded awesome as it would pop and bang all the time. You don't get that with the 1*2 either.

I think the 197's will be looked at very differently when they are down round 1*2 money.

The only thing against them is weight and they still aren't that lardy and losing that crisp packet feel that some like me actually like. A step forward in every other way.

Gearboxes and poor MPG put me off, saying that I get a hard-on daily at a local Albi Blue one. Stunning shape and stunning colour.

The above 2 points really put me off though. With my driving daily I wouldn't see over 25mpg (I actually doubt I'd get 25mpg with such short journeys) and I was getting more in a 3.2 V6.

If you enjoy those aspects of car ownership maybe the 197 is the wrong car? It's an improvement on the previous Clio in terms of build quality but it's not German type motoring.

Ive had two, still love the wee things. Once hooked up to a free flowing A/B road, theres not much for the money that feels so 'right' imo. Thats why i cant part with the b*****d thing!

They also pack some girth for a wee car, it never portrays well in photos though
