Thinners...

  Mito Sportiva 135
Have been working at a garage this week as got some free time, and took the 172 to the bodyshop round the back. I asked the guy there to take a peak at the lower part of the front grille on my car, I had suspected it had been resprayed prior to purchase as the paint was slightly different there to the rest of the car.

His solution to test: wiping with some thinners!! Suffice to say, all the old paint came off and left with a mark where the repair was primered. "Yeah you will need to get that resprayed again" were his words. NO SH.1T!!!

Suffice to say not best pleased, will be going taking the car to an H R Owen approved bodyshop as their work on used Porsches is amazing.

Very annoyed though as you can imagine!

Yeah pretty poor considering he is meant to be a pro, you are right thought that's exactly what he said it was.

Do you think its cheeky asking for him to help sort it out as even though I asked him to check my car I didn't ask him to remove the paint that was on there, even if it wasn't perfect?

Did he apply the thinners or you?

If he took it upon himself to do it then I'd ask him to at least repair the section to the quality of before. If it was advice that you took personally, then I don't think you have much of an argument.

He first tried some G3 compound then went in and got the thinners. Obviously as he was the professional I left it to his judgement but I never specifically suggested or asked for the thinners, and he applied it himself.

I'd certainly try to make him see sense and help you out in some way, even if it's just a discounted job to get it done properly and therefore an improvement upon before.

I was a bit shocked really mate! Kind of walked off not thinking about then I realised some bare primer was exposed at the very bottom of my car.

To be honest you can't really see it but I know its there and will REALLY annoy me. Was going to get an alloy resprayed where some of the laquer has come off (I am guessing it was the same job as whoever fixed this mess originally) so will get both done together probably.

The guy in the body shop mentioned something about spraying the area with just a gloss black but surely that will look turd, even if its on a tiny area surely?

I would think it would look odd - If they are going to blow it in locally they could at least use the right colour rather than just gloss black.

Yeah I agree, no point having kept such good care of the car to get a lousy repair on it.

Might see if he can spray it asa temp job and see how it looks, as I will be going to the other bodyshop anyway. Will be glad to get it 100% though anyway as it wasn't quite there before anyway so that is my silver lining I guess...:dapprove:

Good news! The bodyshop manager has agreed to take it into the oven and do it properly. Best part is the price: £0 :D

It is strange when someone does you a genuine favour these days, just hope they do a good job now!

Pleased to say they did this yesterday and did a thorough job - especially considering it was free! Only a minor bit of overspray which came off with some G3 and will be polishing properly tomorrow IF the rain holds out! Even gave me the rest of the paint he mixed so touched in the couple of minor stone chips I have picked up in the past few thousand miles.

A crate of Belgium's finest beer will be winging it's way to the bodyshop manager as a little thank you!

Yeah did it on the day of the monsoon. Pretty good of them to spend at least an hour and a half on it though, would have been at least £150 normally. Looks a lot better especially with all the stone chips covered now too. Will give it a machine polish tomorrow to bring it all up to par though. Pleased to gert it sorted out anyway!
