Thrashing a cold engine

I know its bad and all, and I avoid it. But I just got curious the other day, what is it that can actually happen if you do that too often?

Dont things tend to work better when they are colder in general? :p

When the engine is cold the metal hasn;t exoanded properly so you get piston slap where the pistons move from side to side slightly in the bores, this just creates a bit of extra wear and tear.....i think
