ticking/tapping noise 172

hi my clio 172 has developed a noise like ticking/tapping i went to a few garages and you know what they are like book it in and we'll see but when you aint got a clue they could tell you anything,i've tried an engine flush and oil and filter change coz i got told that might do it still no change, its there all the time on idle and when driving, anyone got any ideas or had same problems also got told it could be my lifters? dont know if it would of done it but i've always used injector cleaner in with my petrol

I was about to say the charcole cannister definately until i read "when driving".

Mine ticks quite a lot on idle due to this.

could be the tappets, we had a 172 in that we recon never had an oil change EVER, the oil was like treacle! noisy tappets on that

we had to flush the engine out with a diesel/new oil 50/50 mix with some engine flush thrown in for good measure, that sorted it

you get some noise off the injectors but its beyond that

Its a little device that sits in front of the front drivers wheel arch but within the engine bay and its jobs is to evaporate petrol vapours. Sometimes this can cause a ticking on idle but as you increase the revs, so does the frequency of the ticks until about 2500 when it disappears.
