Tickover Going Up and Down

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody can help me out.
Bought a 51 Dynamique and I have noticed the tickover is pretty low at about 500. Is this normal or can it be altered?
Also the engine has been going up and down when just ticking over. Up to nearly 1000 and down to really low so the engine nearly stalls. Anybody know anything about this problem?

Possible idle control valve or maybe MAP sensor. Only way to find out for sure is to get in on a diagnostic test, not too expensive - around £30.

1.2 16v? Any lights on the dashboard?

Cheers for the replies and Yeah its a 1.2 16v.

When driving the electric fault light, i think that's what its called, kept coming on and off but other than that no lights.
