Time Attack Build Begins (Cage in!!!)

  clio 200 F4Rt
so i am well on the way to having the chassis ready for my attempt at Time Attack this year.

I went for the OMP multipoint weld in cage. As it had a good design, and would really add to the stiffness of the car.

I was thinking of attempting to fit it myself, but after deciding that i needed it done properly, i enlisted the skills of Mark Fish Motorsport.

Having dealt with Mark previously i knew he would do a professional job.

So i left the car with him over the festive period, ready for him to start cracking in the new year.

The fitting took 40 hours labour time. This is due to the case that its not a drop in and weld wherever it ends up. The cage had to be carefully lined up, bars put under the correct tension and in the right direction, to make an extremely strong structure.

Mark reckons that cage provides an extra 50% plus stiffness over a standard 6 point bolt in cage! He also tied the cage into the A and B pillars, and front roof cross memeber, with various blocks of welding. This also added to the strength.

I also bought some removable OMP door bars, just so when not on track i could make life slightly easier for getting in and out, as dont forget, this is still my daily driver.

This also meant that with the left over tubing Mark could put some harness bars in for me.

Once i was happy it was time to pay...... now like i said, i could of done the fitting, but i wanted to be happy if tha the worst came to the worst and i had to reply on the cage it would do its job 100%! rather than cave due to me mounting it wrong!!

So total bill was.... £1225 +VAT. Alot of cash, but when you consider the work that went inot it, i was happy.

and finally, some pics! bear in mind that it all needs painting, which i will be doing shortly (all white before anyone asks)

I've gotta be honest mate, that's stupid money. The welds don't look tidy, the dash has been shoddily cut and it has duck tape holding it together.

Ben P's looks as good if not better than that and he's saved £1500ish. Albeit the harness bars are in a debatable position on his....

No doubting it's an amazing car though fella, the seats look awesome!

thats fair enough mate, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I am not too bothered about how 'good' a weld looks. i am more interested in good penetration etc. I rather have an ugly good weld, that a good looking poor weld!

I know ben saved all that labour money, but without disrespecting ben, my cage is installed correctly. For example, the diagonal peice from main hoop to above drivers head, in Mark Fish's words is a 'very important peice'.

but thats why i posted pics, so people can give thier views!

all i know, is a am happy! :D

Very good point mate! £1500 though.....I'd expect him to penetrate me aswell!

  Weeman sucks ****
Looks great, I wish I had the money to fit the same to my cup. That would be the icing on the cake.

Look forward to seeing updates

Looks wicked mate, nicely done with the weld in but seems a bit of a chop job to get it through the dash, guess ive never tried it so not sure whether its good or not.

It slides on and off with abit of manipulation that's what I can't understand! Purposely like, lol.

Nice to see someone on here has proper harness bars! :)

What do you mean by proper harness bars? We're currently fitting a cage and are now looking at where to put the harness bar. Are you saying that based on the height of them? Sorry for the hijack, feel free to reply by pm to save the thead if you wish:eek:

Harnesses need to be fixed to a point where there is no risk of pulling down and crushing spine in an impact.

Ours is planned to be in the same place my only concern is that we only have one diagonal not a cross like this one

The original poster has had bars welded into the cage so that the Belts are mounted as close the the shoulder of the occupant as possible.
Both in height and in distance. Harnesses mounted on the rear floor, up in the air or even lower down on the cage 'can' cause further injury in the unfortunate event of a seriuos accident.

like the harness bars, i was thinking of a bolt in bar on the main hoop for mine, but with 3" harnesses, tilted frames, i think im gona stick it, mine are about a foot higher than bolting to the floor.

did you fit the strenth supports through the bulkhead as per diagram? (which i finaly got of OMP LOL)

Looks very strong and the dashboard will look the nuts flocked, I would get the cage painted though as those welds look like bird s**t.

one of the reasons i didnt and now can fit the support bar to the hoop was, with the seats (at the correct distance back fo rmy driving positon (6ft), the wings would foul it

with a bit of jigging it could be sorted, its hard for the drivers as the pedal can end up being offset

Looking forward to seeing it all finished, a huge chunk of money though for the fitting.

Will the dashboard cuts be tidied up before the flocking ?

you can file i off though, my welder did

spose you would only paint it first if it was going to be a different colour to the car like mine

wow!!

so many questions!! lol.

i am gonna clean up the dash before its flocked. i basically said to Mark Fish, just get it in, and i can do any adjustment, as the labour bill would of been even more!! lol

As for it going through to the struts, i have to say its does not.

basically it would of been an extra days labour to get it through. plus the washer bottle would of had to be moved, there is a fuse box in the way that would have to be extended and relocated. I beleive Mark said the power steering pipes got inthe way, and also the major mountaing points of the dash would be lost.

so all in all this meant so serious fabrication, which at present i cant afford!! lol.

they can be added in future tho.

Plus as i was happy that the cage had the extra attachment on the A and B pillars.
