Time for a clutch change... how much

Hi all,

My clio is in desperate need of a new clutch - its now squeeking on every gear change, its stiff as fcuk and the biting point is right at the top too. Plus my gear lever is not sitting straight (slightly to the right) - so I want to get that sorted too (and apparantly, this can be adjusted when you change the clutch?!?!).

How much am I looking at for a new clutch, clutch cable and the adjusting of the gear lever all in? I have a 93 1.4 RT BTW

Cheers
Pat

hardoware will set you back about 50 quid, and to do the job yourself is free. Its not a hard job, if you can unbolt and rebult then your set.

Its nothing more than drive shafts out, roll pin out the offside shaft (youll need a new one), unbolt the box, take it out, unbolt the clutch over, slide it all off, replace, new thrust bearing on, put back together.

Oh, youll need gearbox oil too.

The halfords where i work in northampton has a clutch for an RT for £30 because theyre being discontinued. It might be worth trying one near you.

Did you know a genuine renault clutch will set ya back £55.00 - the dealers pay about £30.00 from renault. (+ vat). New cable - about £15.00 + vat. why adjust the gear shifter ? is it sloppy - it may be the retainer spring under the shifter on the chassis - it stabilises the shifter. stops it from wobbling - about £16.00 for the kit.

(based on a 1.4 E7J engine)

id echo benR and say DIY - ive never had any mechanical experience, or any mechanical relatives, but i am fairly practically minded and with just the trusty "haynes book of revelations" (love that quote Ben P i think you wrote it!) i managed to do a clutch swap on a micra and on a rover 214. they are long jobs if you havent done one before, as you are naturally apprehensive, but be assured theres nothing diffictult in it, its just unbolt...bolt.
