Timing a Cam belt

All,

Im putting a new belt on my Clio16V this weekend.

In the manual says use a tool to stop the crank from moving. It looks like a bar. Does anyone know the dimensions of this tool to hold/lock the crank in position?

Regards

Rossa

Renault havea specific tool aka bar which slots into the crank to hold TDC.

You dont need it, just place cylinder #1 at TDC and use the timing marks on the cam cover and pullies.

Or make your own marks!

Thread hi-jack... How much was your belt and tensioners? Did you get them from Renault?

I have been quoted £80+vat for my 1.8 RSi?!??!

Cheers guys,

My Renault belt and tensioners was £50

Out of interest - do you know the dimensions of this tool?

I dont know the dimensions, sorry! Have never done a Cambelt before!

You got your belt and tensioners from Renault for £50... Why is mine so expensive!

both.if youve never done a cambelt before then i think its best to pin it up due to you have to remove the bottem pulley to see the crank tdc mark.i know you could just line up the cams and take the pulley off but on a first time of doing a belt i think using the pin is a good idea.also if you set the engine to tdc then the belt has timing marks on it to help you check its timed up correctly.ill get you the part number/price.

ive never used the tool for cambelts, always made my own ref marks.

One bloody tool i need is that b*****d clamp for undoing union joins that attatch to the steering rack.....b*****d design.

The camshafts have gooves which line up behind the pullies, that U shape tool times them, but a rule does the same job.

The crank has a mark on it.

Ive not one one officially for Ren as i dont work in the service dept, o i dont get to use all their official tools, bits and bobs......wish i did though....they do make life easier.

the renault tool fits in the grooves in the end of the cams after removing the blanking plugs in the head.but as a visual rule the large half moon shape goes to the top.

tdc pins fits in the normal place

without these tools you cant properley tension the belt and this has been the cause of a few cambelts snapping on these new 16v engines.

if you want part numbers and prices for the tools i can get them for you.there not much and they make the job a lot easier.

another thing that weve had with these cambelts is the crank pulley bolt comes loose due to people fitting belts and reusing bolts.the bolt is like a stretch bolt which reqs replacement every time its removed and reqs torque/angle tightening.

Its ok, i dont do the F4R very often, infact i try not to do cambelt changes at all lol.

But the price for the TDC pin and Dir.812-01 if thats possible as i know of no other tool tha can get that axial joint off!

ill get you a price+part numbers of the f4r cam tools.what do you mean with the last bit axial joint? Dir is a steering special tool so do you mean the tool to remove track arms from the rack?

yup.....that b*****d axial joint (on the track arms) where it connects to the steering rack.....i cant grip the smooth outer bit to turn it....whya re there no flats?lol

that tool is just the ticket, ill get you a part number and price.due to law changes you can now buy any manual/special tool from your renault dealer.some of the old track arms had a nut shape on the joint but you were still lucky if you could get a spanner on it.on some models its harder to get the rack gaitor on then change the track arms(old espace, old laguna and old safrane-god im glad i dont see many of them anymore)

still fiddly getting the gaiter with the subframe just below it......not too bad though...glad i got small hands.
