Timing Belt & Dephaser Change - A couple of Questions

I don't understand why it's 200 quid to replace the dephaser when it's literally no extra work.

I'm kinda hoping they come back to me and say its less that they say on the website if I get it all done together. Having done some reading all the jobs are linked so its not like you have to do one, put the car back together and start again so it may be cheaper.... hopefully!

Water pump, Aux belt & tensioner, dephaser and cambelt kit are currently on sale at RPD for £435. Call or drop Mick a note to quote for labour as well as cam cover reseal. If you supply the kit.

I would echo what other have said, get it to him or one of the other top specialists. Especially if the crew has limited history. When it’s time to sell that bit of paper is worth the saving you make by sending it to a non specialist. Plus you know it will be done properly and correctly.

I know your pain, my car is due (on time) however it’s only done 11,000 miles since the last time! I can’t imagine for the life of me it needs a dephaser change. Plan is to book it into either AW motor works or Mick. Most likely Mick based on him being a little closer. Then see what he has to say about changing the dephaser. I could do without it to be honest as my wife isn’t working at present.

Thanks, yes I am going to see how much he would quote for just labour and see if its worth getting the parts myself from RPD and I totally agree worth getting done properly for my own peace of mind and if I do decide to sell it at some point.

Is there any point in a cam cover reseal if it's not leaking, I've always thought it best to leave something that isn't leaking well alone?

Is there anything else I need?

Make sure the cam belt kit comes with the cam seals that go behind the pulleys, otherwise it's another £50.

Doesn't look like it so I've added it to the basket, just going to ring Mick and see what he says.

I've had to do get 4 timing belt kits in the last 4 years. The joys of owning 3 Clio Sports.

I haven't used Mick at Diamond but i've been in touch with him over some other work and he's really organised and a super friendly guy. Comes highly recommended.

I think his garage is only 600 yards from Long Eaton train station, so if you need to leave it with him, you could easily drive down, walk to the station, go home, train back, drive home.

He'll be doing the belts on mine when they're due, unless i pluck up the courage to do them myself. I mean what could possibly go wrong! 😂

If he can do it in a day that’d be ideal, there’s no station near my house, living in the middle of nowhere is great at times and a nightmare at others!

I've been to Mick's in December, really great guy and who I'd use for any specialist jobs, I'm sure he'll be able to do it in a day for you. Can easily walk to the centre of Long Eaton and sit in a coffee shop, he'll text you when it's ready.

Good to know. Rang earlier but he’s closed on a Wednesday! The outrage! Lol.

I'm old fashioned like that so I rang him at first too, but I think it's fairly tricky to get a hold of him on the phone even when he is open, might be best dropping him a message on Facebook or through his website with a summary and ask him to call you? Only a suggestion anyway.

I used Mick, Diamond motors back in 2015 for full cambelt, aux belt service. I jumped on the train to Nottingham and wandered round the shops. Was a 6 hour round trip for me but worth it knowing it was done right.
Now I use Birchdown, Andy and Steve are spot on. It's only a 3 hour round trip. Had the cambelt, aux belt service done back end of 2020. I was lucky as Renault Wolverhampton had a sale on the full cambelt kit with dephaser, water pump etc for £296 😊 it's back up at £415 now. I also had oil and filter and spark plugs done at the same time.

that’s why I’m tempted to get the kit from RPD now as it’s a good price. Might just get it anyway, I’m sure he won’t mind fitting it.

I'd get it at that price. Like others have said make sure you get the cam seals too. I'd also get oil and filter done and spark plugs. Once it's done and you can forget about it for 5 years 😊
I'm sure Mick will be ok with you supplying the parts as they're genuine Renault.

Just bought the kit noted above which seems to have all the parts I need (I hope).

The oil and filter have defo been done, as I did them the day I bought the car. I need to do the spark plugs though.

I’d prob buy a crank pulley too, at least have a good look at yours. If its not been done it will need doing now or soon. Never realised my last 172 one the pulley was shot til I started doing the timing belt. Held the job up getting one by the car was much smoother after. My current 172, the power steering started making a noise/belt slipping the other day and looked to see the crank pulley knackered!

Good to know. I’ll get that done as well. Thanks.

I think this thread should be a warning to anyone thinking of buying one of these with limited history lol.
Well they’re knocking on 18-20 years now with the wear and tear to go with it. Took me nigh on 3 years to get my BG to where I wanted it. Did the belts etc first, then just worked my way through it whilst driving it. If you’re hanging on to it, just chip away at it. Some of the repairs on that BG of mine were outstanding - in the worst way.

That’s exactly the plan Jon. I’m in no mad rush. Just want the engine to be spot on to avoid issues, I have no intention of selling it so after this I’ll be plugged away at the rest of it. Lots I can do with minimal cost like the interior cleaning and paintwork correction then I’ll look at the rear axle and front subframe and the bushes erc and then as I have the funds I’ll do the things in the most annoying to the least or something like that.

Just ordered the crankshaft pulley as well. So it’ll all be done at the same time.

Good man. And to give you some idea of the shed I bought, have a read of this - https://cliosport.net/threads/clio-182-track-car-daily-projects.830168/ Give yourself 3 hours to read through it.

I had 2 builds going on simultaneously 😂 still have them today and they’re 👌🏻now

Did Mick get back to you? I'd hold off ordering any parts until you've spoken to him tbh.

Also if he supplies the parts and something fails then you can just take it back, worth the slight premium imo.

He hasn’t yet, but I’ve ordered the parts. I’ll speak to him tomorrow as he was closed today. If he’d rather supply the parts I can send these back to RPD no issue. Just the price was very good so thought I’d just get them now.

I only ask as there’s a dealership about 1/2 a mile from me! I’d guess it’ll be okay expensive but worth considering ?
It's worth enquiring, that dealership (the one near Market Weighton I presume) is a strange old place. It's not a big chain I don't think, it looks and feels more like a family business when I've spoken to them, so they might be quite competitive.

That’s the one. Yeah it’s a family run business. I’ll pop in tomorrow and ask, starter for 10 if nothing else.

Just to suggest an alternative…

Replacement engines can be picked up for 300 quid so why not just get an uber cheap kit from euro car parts knowing that even if it snaps and kills everything your outlay will still be less than the cost of replacing it with the RPD kit from somewhere reputable. Even if your garage doesn’t have the tools you can buy a set for £100 or so then sell them on for the same as you paid for them. I’d genuinely sooner replace an engine than pay nearly a grand to change a belt.

Bad idea to rely on a ‘new’ engine. I can’t say I’ve looked but isn’t a £300 engine more 5 years ago? It’d also never be £300, you’d end up with an unknown engine, prob need belts doing, might as well do clutch blah blah. Then imagine getting it all in and it’s a turd.

the euro’s kit isn’t cheap either. You can get genuine Renault kits for £110 on eBay or with dephaser for £189
