Timing Belt

  MK2 P1 1.4S
How much would it cost to replace a Timing belt roughly? The engine is the 1.4 in a MKII. I heard that it's worth replacing this before it reaches it's due replacement date, better than bent valves galore.
Thanks

if you do it yourself, around £40 (thats for the new belt/bearing), 60 if you go to gagrage maybe...

Now that is a surprise. I always had visions of it being horrendously expensive. (maybe I just remember the F355's timing belt change costing well over £2500 too much):p

I just got mine done from Ranault dealer and it was £220 including fan belt and power steering belt.

This included them replacing all tensioners

lol.

£200+?! thats mad! the belt only cost £60 from renault (thats the kit, asked price bout 2 days ago)and 40 from 3rd party comapnys (such as goodyear), and it takes about 40 mins to change it...you lot must be getting ripped off.

to change belt, you have to;

find TDC -2mins max
support engine on jack - 30 seconds max
remove any engine mounts in the way (normallt just 1) - 10mins max
remove aux belt/pully - 5 mins max
remove covers - 3 mins max
replace belt - 10 mins max
put it all bk - 20mins or so

Seems simple enough, I might just try and fit it myself; although I have only done very basic work on engines.

Ring up a few garages see what you get quoted. Depending where you are I'd say £200 isn't to far off a good garage (the important work is good there alot of local garages who will do 172's for less but I wouldn't trust them).

Cost me £510 for Renault to change mine on my 172

I think the Kit alone costs £140 on the 172
