Timing......

  2003 Clio 172
Right-o,

So I bit the bullet and got the whole she-bang done at a reputable place here.

This included:
Cambelt + tensioners
Aux belt + tensioners
Water pump + Renault coolant
Dephaser
New cam pulley seals
New crank bolt

So I think it was the full package. Anyway....terrible engine clatter and tapping now gone.....super happy with that.

But I now have an idle that I would say is quite a bit lumpier, hard to describe. Still idles at around 1k RPM (Henk map) but its almost like how a drag racer engine idles, blurt...blurt....blurt....blurt. Fella advised that the timing was indeed out (from Renault :/) but, maybe this is just in my head....but I thought it was smoother before.....almost sure of that......anyway. I pulled the caps tonight and stripped down a bit to check.

I locked the crank with an allen key making sure it was in the locking hole rather than the gimpy recess on the crank.

Bear in mind, I dont have the locking tools, just my eye and a ruler.......buuuuuut, I think (and I hope I am wrong) that the timing is out on the inlet cam. I will be really disappointed if so as I was really hoping this was my super-duper-go-to-garage. Looking at it for ages......I just dont see how a cam lock tool would slide into this easily?

Would appreciate it if you could share your thoughts?

*yes, I know its hard to see but I guess if you are familiar with this engine, it might be obvious.

They are notoriously lumpy mind you. Could be leads or something like that if the timing isn't out

Ach balls.....that's gutting.....thanks for confirming Mike.

Hey Crib....I have had the car for nearly 5/6 years now......definately lumpy.....but this is different lumpy......kinda. Could this 1/2 degrees cause that?

You know when someone inspires confidence and you are super happy that they have done a good job? Yeah....i just had that taken away 😧

I dont like to pick up on stuff like this as I never want mechs (especially highly rated ones) thinking I am second guessing them

I am going to suggest that I strip it at his place and then lock it up and try and get his cam lock in. That way.....he isn't wasting time until we see that it definately is out and then it will be at his place and part way stripped anyway.

I want to think of a compromise if possible.....how does that sound? Would you be offended as a mech if I suggested that?

seen a lot worse than that but probably ok with the correct tools , cant see that making it run that bad would check other things to be safe.
No ones perfect and if that was me I would rectify free of charge, and I would strip and check first off without expecting customer to do it.

I honestly don't know mate. Might be worth while firing up a video and seeing what response that gets. Hard to know for anyone without actually hearing/seeing it.

I think with any decent mechanic worth their salt would want you satisfied 100%. Don't worry about taking it back with an issue. You've paid a lot of money to have the job done

I hear you guys......I guess I am just a bit of a wuss :p
I will contact the fella and see what he says. He was very dead on but yeah, it was grown up money (that I really don't have) so would like it perfect.
If I am being perfectly honest.....I had a spare set of end caps and just wanted a wee nosey, never thought I would notice it being out *sigh*
Crib, will try and get a video but these cars are so noisy, its hard to hear anything....lol.

Hmm......sorta.....lol......we are shat at this :p
So before......it idled.....like......normal. Tappy and rattly but constant 1k rpm.........the occasional wee bump but....pretty normal.
Now it is kinda......bruuump, bruuump, bruuump, bruump......with notable vibration through the cabin.

*bruump - that's all i got :)

lol.....yeah.....that would be cool bud.......fk me.....feel like a saddo.....lol.
Fussing like this over a car that's worth 28p.
Still going to pick up with the guy on the timing.....off on hols for a week next wed so would be a prudent opportunity to leave it up with him to sort without rushing.

Mine is the same mate. Exactly the same. @NorthloopCup has been iside mine and said it is fine. Might just be running a tad advanced.
Im going to hoover mine in a bit if i can be arsed. Will get a vid.

Mine was like this. I convinced myself it was ok. Took it over to Mick and it was infact out. Not saying yours is though

Mate if you think its out and a specialist off here thinks so by the looks too, get him to check it.

You paid a reputable tuner for a reason.
