To upgrade to a LY R27 F1 197 or not?

  LY R27 F1 Clio
Not had my Iceberg 172 for long now but a Luquid yellow R27 197 F1 has caught my eye. Although im happy with my 172, ive wanted an F1 for a while now. Im torn between the two and im struggling to make a decision! Trouble is, if i leave it much longer im sure the F1 will be snapped up by someone else. HELP!!!!!!!!! :S

Never driven a 172, but I love my R27! Go for it! I even had Jehovas witnesses knock the door today.....they were more interesting in asking about the car than trying to 'convert' me! lmao

If you like it and can afford it! Get it!
Why would you want advice from here!
There awesome cars, just make sure you check the car thoroughly before purchasing!
Do it!

Love the car and it ticks all the boxes! But like my 172 aswell. Wish I could keep both haha! The car is from a Reno stealer and comes with 2yrs warranty which is pretty good too!

Id say test drive it... Then make a decision on what you prefer. Can you justify spending the extra money on the car for what it gives you in return. Its your own personal opinion that counts when buying a car for yourself.

I drove it today and loved it, must admit it did feel much more refined than my 172. Saying that, its 5yrs newer so you would expect that. Im sat on the fence at the mo and just need a kick in the right direction haha!

i own both and id say that the R27 is a very nice to have car, however id want good spec and low miles, as with the 200 out now the values are coming down significantly.

Fair bit more wedge, why didn't you initially go for a r27.

I was looking at them but with never owning a renaultsport clio before, I thought it would be better to go for a cheaper onewith low miles (45k). Had a fair few issues with the 172 tho, it was due a cambelt change which was my fault as i didnt research it before i bought the car, after a few weeks it needed a new rack, steering angle sensor, rocker gasket, exhaust mounts went and it needed a brake position switch. The f1 has 2yrs warranty so thats a bit of a bonus with my renault past history lol.

I think another test drive tomorrow is in order, that should make my mind up. Thanks for all your comments :approve:

I'll be honest, if you're budget is at that level I wouldn't restrict yourself to just the Clio. For a cheap hot hatch, nothing beats a 172 (civic etc are pricier for similar miles).
There's a lot of very decent cars at the price if an r27.

Guessing you're going to be taking a big hit on the 172. After spending the money on maintenance/repairs you have I'd want to enjoy the 172 for a while before swapping it.

If you can afford it...do it; you will not regret it! For me, the R27 is the really head turner out of the two...such a lovely looking car! I think 172s still look well and are a great car, but for me, it would be the R27 all day long. Probably slightly higher running costs in it...but its all relevant.

+1, i have to agree with you there mate

I'd get shot of the 172 before it costs you any more money. The R27 is the best-looking Clio of the lot IMO (bar the V6).

Two years warranty will give you peace of mind so as long as you can afford it, go for it.

Would probably have been better to go for the R27 in the first place but hey ho, you live and learn.

I'm assuming the r27 is 9.5k ish? There's a few hot hatches at that price that I'd also consider.

Not a hatch, but great cars

Sounds a bit like you rushed into the 172, be a shame to repeat the same mistake.

Yeh go and drive a car with the Honda K20 engine, ep3 type r, or a DC5 Integra which has the K20a extra 20bhp and an LSD, promise you wont be dissapointed.

If you want some info on them, or want to see how they go, the Best Motoring video's on youtube are good.

However, if its a Clio your after, then that one your talking about sounds good, especially with the 2 years warranty remaining.

Honda's can be quiet hard work day to day i found, high revving cars need to be adjusted to and i love Honda's aswell!

172 to 197 is more of a side step, better built and spec'd but thats about it. Its a great looking car but when i test drove the same car my 172 felt alot eager and willing.

As stated there's loads out there, thats why i got the Mini.

Forgot about the mini. A cooper s works should be considered imo. Such great fun!

Do it lol or maybe look at a 200? if not test a few cars before but it seems like you have already made your mind up. So do it ;)

  LY 200
I went from an LY cup packed 182 (which i had for 4 years) to basically a 197 thats an R27 (cup chassis, recaros etc) and the 197 is in a different league so im sure you'll not regret it if the R27's a gooden.

Only thing i would say is as nice as LY is i always worried where i parked/left mine as it was such an attention seeking colour and a nightmare to put right if it gets knocked or damaged.

Eh, i'd call a 172 to a 182 as a side step, the MK3 is a completely different car in terms of handling/feel/refinement. Only thing thats similar is the speed, but then so is a MCS CTR etc etc

I sold my 197 that i had for 18 months about this time last year. Went back to a 172 Cup of which i'd owned for 3 years before that, and i couldnt wait to get another 197. I love mine to bits

Lovin the mix of comments. Drove it again today and will ring them in the morning to let them know what I have decided. As said by 'Liquid Yellow', the 172 may carry on costing more and more. Think ive made my decision anyway ;)

Id say the speed was the thing that was different (197 not feeling as eager) and ultimately made me give the key's back to the dealer and go else where. The 200 IMO is the Upgrade, not the 197.

hmmmm ive driven a 200 Cup a fair bit, and its not the massive upgrade its made out to be. Yes, bit better lower down, i like the quicker rack on cupped cars, but you'd not pull massive chunks out of a 197. Once wound up your're splitting hairs imo

After a long thought out decision, I bought it! Pick it up at the weekend! Thanks for your comments.

Nice cars. Always wanted an R27 but couldnt justify the insurance. The Mk2 is a little dated now, small and diddy (oh s**t did i just say that) Interior is appauling too now ive lived with the GT for a year, and thats saying something as the GT's isnt great, for those than want to tell me the GT's interior is nothing like a 197, go google (Ignoring the lack of recaro sportsters). Power delivery is a lot smoother in the 197 than the 172 as well.
