If i buy myself a tomtom 520 can I only update the maps for a year and then have to pay for them after that? Seems a bit of a rip off really!

yer u usually get a set period of free updaes then after that a subscription for another year etc, can be sourced off web though

and it aint a rip off really.

Anyone know how I can source these map updates online, for my tomtom ONE XL? I'm assuming its through torrent sites or similar, and do you just copy the files over onto an SD Card along with the application software for the device? Josh

As far as i can see from the site you get the first years maps free then pay for the updates. not sure about mapshare but dont want to pay £150 now then another 3-40 next year to keep it up to date!

Don't pay then.

But don't come on here after being lost in the middle of nowhere because it's sent you down a road which is now one way... and start moaning ;)

In the "olden" days people would just take a new map from the local petrol station when they fancied a newer updated one, after all, they'd already paid for an older one previously! ;)

Just think the prices for the newer maps are very expensive tbh, surely if you are spending £100+ on a sat nav the least they can do is give you free updates

I know what you mean, I spent about £250 for my TomTom and now to get the new maps they want another £75 which is nearly a third again of the original price of the device.

Apparently I've had over 80,000 corrections on the maps I've currently got, so it either shows the maps were crap in the first places or things have changed a lot since.

They'd go out of business though - updating maps costs them money.

I think the update for mine is £40 for Great Britain.. that's fine for me. I got one update free within 1 month of owning it, then I'll just wait until next year then I'll pay for the update.
