i have the money to get this done, but am still undecided if its worth it.. do i cut my loses, break the car, buy a new clio... or have the gearbox/clutch fixed and decided to fix the knocking next month.. i have alot of car for £800, but now i know why!
The thing is when you break one most of the money is in the engine and gearbox.
A serviced engine in good nick with new belts will go for around £800.
By the time you get the gearbox, clutch, pullys and belts sorted on top of what you paid for it,
you'll be in the rough ball park for a half decent one anyway, depending on mileage.
How many miles does it have on it, service history?
release bearing started whining, (or somethin when i touched the clutch) then 15 miles later it wouldn't go into gear with engine running.. had to get it home stopping and starting..
service history says clutch was bought 6mths ago :-/
Sounds like you've bought a right can of worms, might be worth asking about parts cost in the Engine/Gearbox/Running gear section.
If your going to get it sorted i'd recommend becoming a member, then you can access the traders section, they all offer discounts for members, one of the traders sells second hand/reconditioned parts, so for £12 joining fee you could be saving a decent amount of money on parts and servicing.
Every year my membership fee more than pays for itself on oil & parts discounts.
Then again you never know, someone might be willing to buy it off you for £800quid.
I found it easier to lift the engine and box out in one, rather than just the box or engine. Dont have to worry about separating them until theyre out the car.
im not going to do the cambelt/dephaser until i know the car is worth spending money on.. i have my heart sent on throttle bobies..
my mate spent 3k+ on a 172.. his has just jumped a few teeth.. oooops
