Tow bar on a 172

I have a 2002 clio 172 and im wondering if i am able to fit a tow bar to it?

Because it would just be wrong! Well I suppose unless you fitted one that could be removed when not in use.

im not asking weather it looks good if i fit one or how much it can tow, all im asking is can you fit one and if not, why not? cant have a roof box/rack because i need to tow my bike on a bike trailer

are you actually meant to put them on any car then? people put them on their cars if they are needed regardless if its a 172 or not

iv heard of them being fitted yes, will look odd but needs must matey. try a quick search maybe?

There is something that says the sports should not be used for towing somewhere theres been threads on it before on here. Try the hand book maybe.

IIRC the 172 is not registered as a car thats allowed to tow. there is a thread from about a year ago do a search it has all the info in it

Well 182's don't have anywhere to connect one to? I suppose 172 might be ok. They're part of the MOT now, so thought they had to be done properly.

They are not homologated for towing therefore against the law.

In the VOSA magazine about the rear brakes on cups theres a pic of a 172 on the ramps with a tow bar, I thought it strange at the time.

It can be done, recommemded though i'm unsure. There is a member on here who has one to tow his moto x bike trailer, so only a light little thing.

only want it for towing a light bike trailer and motocross bike anyway so it will never be towing heavy loads

From what I've found the cars were never tested sufficiently to gain legal certification, so it is illegal to tow with an RS Clio, however people do do it and I doubt the police would spot this, or really bother to inforce it.

It looks like the std kits for mk2 Clios would fit a 172, although I'm not 100% sure.

PS: I've been towing with a 8v 1.2 Corsa for years, so I've got no doubts in the 172's ability to tow, lol

im looking into the same thing mate. only want to tow a small motorcycle trailer so I can head to trackdays in a bit of warmth!
ive seen some towbars on ebay for clio's. you could try there.

Regs are about the size of the vehicle in relation to the weight of the trailer not the power of the engine

It can be done and is fine. (Unsure about 172 cups due to brakes)

even tells you how much you can/can't tow in the manual for my 172, did in my 182 manual too.

legally there not aloud not sure why, its also like the bmw m3 and the seat leon cupra there the same to.
