Toxic Fume Light - Help?!

  Clio 182
Hi Chaps,

I have a 2004 182, which so far has caused me no end of grief. Serviced every year, belts done, new PAS pump and water pump last month as they were knackered.

Anyway, new problem, was driving along at the weekend and the toxic fume light started flashing. Pulled over, turned off the engine, looked at the manual and read etc. Driving back home the light stayed on and is still on. The engine bay smelt like burning plastic/rubber as well but couldn't pin point the location of it.

I've been through pages on here reading up on the light. I can't smell fuel, its not misfiring, the engine is running ok and its not gone into 'limp' mode. I also had both sensors replaced in the exhaust system in September 2010 so SURELY it can't be that?

Any help is greatly received guys.

hi mate, to save wasting time go to a garage with some good diagnostics kit to find out. there are hundereds of fault codes so dont waste time guessing. if the garage is any good they will have a scope to test signals to and from sensors. be warned tho 9 times out of 10 the fault code is a symptom of something else! not the sensor faulty!

If everything you've said is true...I'd imagine that your catalytic converter is on it's way out IMO. The reason I think that is that the cat is really what controls the emissions and if it's on it's way out the light would come on because your emissions are increasing and the burning smell could be the internals of the cat melting. You did say that your car isn't misfiring but this is a cause of cats breaking.
